Project Surnames:Project Background: | Do Ramseys and Ramsays share a common heritage, and can we use genetic methods to determine the origins and the links of the various lines under study by family historians in the Eastern United States? The project began with the relatively narrow aim of identifying locations and family trees in the US for deeper research on Ramsey and Ramsay families, but is now expanding into a new phase where all Ramseys and Ramsays are encouraged to explore their origins together. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd. Furthermore, researched existing links can be verified or questioned, and more robust family trees will result. We also wish to explore the deep origins of the Ramseys and Ramsays, ultimately linking with other lines across the world, and identify the locations of the European origins of our forefathers. As part of this we expect to be able to estimate the number of Ramsey/Ramsay founding fathers with descendents alive today.

A total of 18 results are now in, which includes welcome donations of data from individuals who had undergone testing prior to the launch of the project. Among these 18 haplotypes all are different except for four and two pair might be distantly related. These results surprised us, as we were not expecting to see such a diversity of origins. It is clear that our understanding of the adoption of surnames way back in time may need revision, and that the number male Ramseys and Ramsays arriving in the States over 200 years ago may also be greater than we expected. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd.
