Haplogroup (hap-lo-group) is a term use by genetic anthropology to indicate genetic populations groups. The groups are often geographically oriented and can be used to map historical human migration patterns. The groupings are determined by a set of SNP markers (a type of markers with only two values, meaning that they have mutated only once in human history). By adding more SNP markers they are still working on refining the groups into subgroups. The groups are named by a series of alpha numeric characters. The chain of characters become longer as one is put into subgroups.

One haplogroup in Belgium is the R1b. My haplogroup was determined to be R1b1c. This is not a surprise, as the R1b group is the most common group in England and Western Europe. It will be interesting to see what other groups show up in Belgium.

Note: without being tested for SNP markers, in most cases your general haplogroup can be determined by using your set of STR markers.
