Project Surnames:Project Background: The Neff Family Historical Society, Inc. of America began in 2005 a Surname research project based upon and utilizing the latest Y-chromosome DNA testing technology. The Neff surname lines under study are those who immigrated from Switzerland and Germany to North America from the early 1600's to the end of the 1700's. The original spelling is generally found as NAF, however common variation in America are found as Naef, Naff, Naff, and Nave.
The first phase of this project involves the identification of men who descent from a Neff immigrant to America where their genealogy has been well documented by the Neff Family Historical Society. Y-chromosome DNA samples from MALE descendents of these immigrants, is being used to establish our "Base Y-chromosome signatures." Unfortunately females do NOT not carry the y-chromosome gene and cannot participate directly. Women may want to sponsor a father, brother, husband or other male relative with the Neff, Naff, Nave, Naef or Näf surname.
Participants descended from 19th and 20th century immigrants lines, as well as those wishing to identify their family line to a Neff immigrant line, are welcome to join at any time. Meaningful results, however, may depend upon the completion of the first phase of the project. For family genealogical information, please visit: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~neff/ You may also send an email to and our research team will assist you in indentifying your Neff - Naef - Naff - Nave family line.

Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project Goals: 1. To correlate Y-chromosome DNA signatures of the various identified NÄF, NAEF, NEFF, NAVE, NAFF North American immigrant lines with DNA signatures. This project seeks to build on the already extensive Neff Family Historical Society's genealogical data bases compiled since 1991 with the help of many family researchers and extensive use of PRIMARY Historical Records.
2. To help families identify and/or verify their Neff immigrant lines through DNA matches.
3. To determine relationships of those lines to one another and establish lineages, in particular, for time periods before the existence of records. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd. Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project News: 1 October 2008: The question is regularly asked as to which test should I select? The Y-DNA12: 12 marker test should only be used if you have no idea where your family ancestors came from. This test will only give you a clue to the ethnic group you belong to. For the purposes of our project, the Y-DNA37: 37 marker test is more than adaquate. A more expensive and detailed test, such as the Y-DNA67: 67 marker test should be used only if you are seeking to proved 2nd, 3rd, or 4th cousins or siblings for example are from the same family. This test has no add value to our project. A 37 marker test can be upgraded to a 67 marker test by Family Tree DNA without the need for an additional test kit. Contact FTDNA for more information.
30 September 2008: We welcomed three new members to our project in September. Two trace their families to the [G] line descending from Detrict "Teter" NAVE of Carter Co., TN and one from our [W] line descending from Simon NEEF (b. 1610-d.bef.1696) Germany, Brötzingen (Pforzheim). We look forward to their 37 marker Y-chromosome results.
19 August 2008: Several interested Neff males have ask if they could be tested through the DNA Project sponsored by ANCESTORY.COM and have their results transferred to this project. We have NO way at this time to convert and/or correlate Y-chromosome results provided Ancestory which would have any accurate meaning to our reported results as determined by Family Tree DNA,Inc. and their testing protocol.
10 August 2008: We currently have 32 Y-chromosome DNA test returned to us and 10 addition tests are pending.
24 September 2007: We have completed 23 Y-chromosome 37 marker tests as part of the Base Line DNA project. Our first test of a member of the Swiss Naef clan from Zürich was also posted. Denoted as CH1, this test is from a donor descending from a son of Adam Näf Sr. [1485-1531]. The 12 marker results of this test matches a number of our early Neff line in America. Members in the study can log in using their kit number and password and go to "Y-DNA Results." You will begin to see comparative results based on FTDNA's computer models. These results do not completly agree with the Neff Family Historical Society's genealogical records. Certain mutations may accounts for the differences.
30 August 2007: We have completed 21 Y-chromosome 37 marker tests as part of the Base Line DNA project. There are three additional tests in progress and 5 Y-chromosome 37 marker tests which have been submitted by donors directly to FTDNA for comparative purposes. Further updates will be posted shortly.
31 July 2006: There are 18 members in the project. Results for 4 complete tests are still pending; several partial results are also pending. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd.
