Background

Welcome to the McAlister DNA Project Public Website.

In July 2000, Clan McAlister of America held their biennial reunion in Norman, OK where one of the members made a presentation on genetic genealogy.  Shortly after the reunion,  Wanda Shelton, another member of CMA became so interested that she began searching for a DNA provider.  She wanted to prove that her McAlister kin, with ties to Monroe County, TN, were related.

In her search for a DNA testing provider, she contacted Family Tree DNA.  Bennett Greenspan, President and CEO of FTDNA, provided assistance and guidance in establishing the McAlister DNA Project.  Family Tree DNA appointed her as Project Administrator.

She asked six male members of her McAlister cousins to take the Y-12 marker DNA test. The test results were DNA matches, related.  Wanda’s venture into Genetic Genealogy proved successful and that her research on the McAlister group from Monroe County, TN was correct. As the McAlister DNA project grew in numbers, subgroups were formed based on the participants' DNA results.  Wanda's subgroup #1 has grown to 18 members.

In 2007, Wanda resigned from many of her genealogical activities, but she still wanted to maintain her work with the Monroe County, TN group of McAlister kin.  In 2008, J A McAlister was asked to help with the DNA project and appointed Project Administrator.
