Project Background: The Maybury Surname Project is for persons named Mabry, Mayberry, Maybury, Maberry, Mabrey, etc. We seek participants who descend from different emigrants from England and Ireland who came to America, Canada and Australia. Those who came to America include: Francis Maybury (1679 VA); Thomas Maybury (1716 PA); William Mayberry (1730 MA); Frederick Mayberry (ca 1750 NJ); Richard Hawkes Maybury (to Missouri in 1868); etc. More information and updates will be posted on the Maybury Family web page: www.mayburyfamily.org. For more information please contact me at dcollins@mabryfamily.org.

Project Goals: Our first goal was to determine if descendants of several early immigrants to America named Maybury, Mayberry, Mabry, etc. had a common ancestor.
A second goal is to see if it is possible to distinguish between various branches of the family. This is proving to be more difficult, although we may have found a distinguishing marker for those Mayberrys whose ancestors lived in County Londonderry, Ireland beginning about 1657. |
Project Results: Early in the project, it became clear that most Mayburys DO DESCEND FROM A COMMON ANCESTOR. We have identified that common ancestor as John Maybury who lived in Sussex, England when he was first married in 1565.
A second result is the discovery that descendants of Frederick Mayberry of Bedford County, Virginia have a unique DNA signature which easily distinguishes them from the English Maybury family. However, this does not mean that Frederick Mayberry was not related to the English Mayburys. We are still looking at the possibility that the "German tradition", which has come down to many of his descendants, may have come from the German community near Philadelphia where Frederick probably lived before moving to Virginia. |
DNA Test Results (Alleles) for Project Members * Haplogroups in green have been
confirmed by SNP testing. Haplogroups in red have
been predicted by Family Tree DNA based on unambiguous results in the
individual's personal page. This has been placed on this GAP page for your ease
and convenience. Please note that for any predicted results we see no reason for
ordering a SNP test to confirm the Haplogroup. if a – is in the HAPLO field then
we feel that the comparative results are not clear and unambiguous and if the
kit holder wants to know their SNP with 100% confidence they may consider
ordering a SNP confirmation test.
