Project Background:
The National Association of Leavitt Families is an organization formed around the descendants of immigrants John Leavitt of Hingham,MA and Thomas Leavitt of Hampton,NH, both arriving in America in the 1620-30's. We have now begun a DNA project looking into their ancestry, to see if there is any connection between the two.

Project Goals:
- We are looking for male Leavitt volunteers from each of those five sons of John Leavitt of Hingham,MA who had descendants, as well as the line of Thomas Leavitt of Hampton,NH (including the early Leavitt family living in Scarborough,ME in mid 1700's).
- We also welcome anyone with variations of this surname, such as Levet or Levit, as the 'a' in the name was an American addition, and there surely are distant cousins living in England and elsewhere.
- Though the smaller 12-marker test is sufficient to show if any relationship between the different Leavitt lines existed, the more amounts of markers tested (preferably 37 or more) will be able to give us a more accurate timeframe as to when a common ancestor (if they indeed had one) lived.

Project News:
As of this writing, we have 5 volunteers for our Y-DNA testing project. Thank you!

Project Results:
Early results are in from four volunteers, two from the Thomas Leavitt line (a Hampton,NH family and a Scarborough,ME one) and two from Deacon John's family (descendants of sons Nehemiah and Josiah). The test results clearly tell us that 1) the Scarborough Leavitt's DO descend from the Hampton family and 2) immigrants Thomas and John were NOT related.

* Haplogroups in green have been confirmed by SNP testing. Haplogroups in red have been predicted by Family Tree DNA based on unambiguous results in the individual's personal page. This has been placed on this GAP page for your ease and convenience. Please note that for any predicted results we see no reason for ordering a SNP test to confirm the Haplogroup. if a – is in the HAPLO field then we feel that the comparative results are not clear and unambiguous and if the kit holder wants to know their SNP with 100% confidence they may consider ordering a SNP confirmation test.
