Project Background: We began this DNA project to identify and establish relationships between the various Kennerly, Kennerley, Kenerly, etc ... family lines of NC/VA/MD in the US. However, after extensive genealogical research, we've found "Kennerly's" all across the US (SC, TX, KY, FL, TN, AR, CA, IN, IL, MO, OR, SD/ND, MI, RI, NY, New England), Canada, Europe (England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany)... even in Australia and New Zealand!
The biggest challenge is the different Kennerly spelling variations: Kennerly, Kennerley, Kenerly, Kenerley,Kinnerly, Kinnerley, Kinly, Kinley, Kenly, Kenley ... Kennedy, McKinly, Connelly, etc. Obviously mistakes by census takers and record clerk's, but no matter how these misunderstandings or spelling errors occurred, they've continued to present day and greatly complicate tracking the different Kennerly families.
So, we've expanded the project to include all possible spellings and geographical locations. We welcome the widest possible participation and invite African American and Native American's to join, too!
We'll help you track your family history and distinquish participants into appropriate groups. The Kennerly name has a rich history with many possible origins. More historical details exist for you to discover!
Visit my North Carolina Kennerly page, it will soon expand to cover all Kennerly families across the US:

Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project Goals: Why test: to identify your family relationships with different Kennerly - Kenerley families and solve your genealogy questions with regard to ancestor's country of origin, immigration, and migration.
DNA testing provides the probability of your ancestor's genetic distance and relationship with other Kennerly DNA project participants. DNA Testing can also greatly assist your genealogical research by indicating which geographical locations your ancestors came from.
Finally, DNA testing can validate your deductions on your family lineage in the absence of original source documents and proof (marriage, birth, death, land, court records, bible, etc) and eliminate any questions! Most importantly -- DNA testing can also confirm source document info.
For those who participate in the Kenerley - Kennerly DNA project and need research help, several individuals are willing to assist by finding source documents and tracing your family history.

Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project News: We're currently searching for living Kennerly's with connections to:
Mississippi or Louisiana relatives of John Conrad Kennerly (mid-1800s) -- Solved John Conrad Kennerly was the son of Samuel Kennerly from SC.
Texas relatives of Everton Kennerly (early to mid-1800s) -- Solved!!! Email for more info!!!
Maryland Kennerly's -- further DNA testing required.
Cheshire England Kennerley's -- further DNA testing required.
Irish Kennerley's -- further DNA testing required.
VA/SC Kennerly's -- further DNA testing underway; results pending.
Members are testing right now to find relatives of those above.
If interested in participating, please contact the DNA administrator.
Several tests are pending. DNA samples from people with known linages from Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas, Canada, Ireland and England are on file for comparison with other Kennerly / Kennerley / Kenerley / Kenerly branches of the family. This range of DNA samples provides a good baseline with variety for others to determine their family line of ancestry.
NC Kennerly's -- we're looking for Mecklenburg and Bumcombe County participants.
See: http://ken4af.googlepages.com
We're also seeking voluntary contributions to assist others in joining our project. As a member of the project, you do receive a substantial discount over individual participation with Family Tree.
You can be assured of privacy as no personal info is ever released without your written consent.

Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project Results: Recent News Mar 2008: Further testing on the NC Kennerly's revealed a direct realtionship between 2 members of the NC Kennerly line and the VA/SC Kennerlys. More VA Kennerly participants are needed to distinquish the family branches stemming from Samuel Kennerly.
We've recently discovered some interesting Kennerly connections with surnames other than Kennerly. We'll group those "possible" connections separately.
Lab tests reveal a VA/SC Kennerly participant is a perfect match on 12 markers with 3 NC Kenerley/Kennerly's indicating these 4 people share a most probable ancestor (99% likelihood) in a relevant genealogical time frame (71% chance within 12 generations / 92% within 24 generations, etc). Further testing is pending.
Previous lab results indicated the Maryland Kenerly lineage is separate and distinct from the VA/SC and North Carolina Kennerly's, with regard not only to DNA markers but also Haplogroup. However, this is based on only 1 MD Kenerly DNA sample. Further MD Kenerly participates are needed to confirm them as a separate and distinct line. Further testing will also confirm the lineage of the Texas Kennerly family (Recently confirmed!!!).
The VA/SC & North Carolina linage has a probably but very distant relationship to 1 "English" Kennerley member. However, this distant relationship was expected due to the immigration into the US in the 1600's.
Initial tests of the first two project members resulted in a complete match on 12 markers. One individual from TX discovered a "most probable" relationship to another Kennerly from the East Coast immediately!
Several members share a "null" value on 1 marker, which is unusual! This is important when reviewing results as this marker's difference can imply a much closer relationship than other markers.
