Project Background:

The Hope Surname Project was started by Jack Hope in 2004. We have now attracted enough participants that we're beginning to see groupings of matching individuals. These groupings and comparisons among participants can be seen in more detail at www.hopednaproj.com. All FTDNA Hope Surname Project participants are especially interested in pushing their known ancestry further back in genealogical history.

Project Goals:

The Hope Surname Project seeks to provide data that will allow the better definition of genetic relationships among diverse Hope lines internationally. We hope to enable individuals to identify their personal ancestral lines and relate them to others. To this end, we encourage ALL Hope males to submit their DNA samples within the project. Hope Females, please encourage your brothers and/or male Hope cousins to submit their DNA under the project. The more participants we have, the more we will all learn. We also have several individuals who have submitted mtDNA for testing for maternal ancestry. We consider this a valid arm of the Hope Surname Project, even though mtDNA doesn't follow surname lines.

Project News:

Several people have asked how the surname project will help them with their genealogy. In the Hope Surname Project, we have a number of members have matched closely enough to be grouped. Interaction among these individuals has determined that one who had believed he was descended from a specific Hope family found that he was not. In other cases, interaction among matching individuals has helped push earliest known ancestors back several generations.

Project Results:

We now have a number of different, unmatched lines as well as groups or closely matching Y-DNA profiles. These have resulted in several members of the project advancing their Hope genealogies significantly. Male Hopes not in the project are encouraged to compare their profiles with the participants and/or contact the administrator for further information.
