Project Surnames:Project Background: | After searching records for the past 25 years, information on my family surname kept coming to a dead end. This has probably happen to thousands of individuals researching their family linage. I am hoping this project will generate years of research, and generate many new family connections. The project is interested in all Dunn families, including any variation of the name. If you are at a dead-end in searching for your family linage, I am confident that this project will open new doors to research, were poor records keep the doors closed. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd. Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project News: | The project is funding five Dunn surname DNA tests One of the tests, a descendant of Hugh Dunn and Elizabeth Drake out of Piscataway, NJ, has already been found, and the test is on its way to the lab. A descendant of Thomas Dunn and Mary Caldwell out of Fayette County, PA has been found, however the dission go with the test is still pending. We are still looking for descendants of the following Dunn families: One 12 marker DNA test for a descendant of James Dunn and Jean Ferrell/Farrell in 1746 in Wilmington, Delaware and later settled in Frederick County, Virginia (part of current day Berkeley County, West Virginia), one 12 marker DNA test for a descendant of Thomas Dunn and Rebecca Wickersham 1793 in Frederick County, Virginia, and one 12 marker DNA test for a descendant of John Dunn of Frederick County, Virginia and Elizabeth Baldwin 1801. Both John and Thomas later settled in Warren County, Ohio. The descendants surname name must be Dunn. These tests are being funded by project members. If you believe you are a descendant of any of these families please contact the Dunn surname Administrator. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd. Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project Results: So far we have six members in the project. All of us live in different parts of the United States, and had never communicated prior to joining the project. Until recently all of us are at a dead-end with our research, with all but one traced back to the mid 1700’s. Three of us have traceable family trees to Pennsylvania. One is from Virginia. A descendent of the Hugh Dunn family recently join the project. His test is on it's way to the lab. And the last lives in HI, but states his family can from either PA of NC.
Four of us have the results of our 12 marker DNA test. What we found is that two of us Steve & Mike have an exact match, however we have not been able to determine where we are connected as yet; my family is traced back to Western, PA, late 1700’s and Mike’s only knows that his father was born in Philadelphia, PA. Family lore has his family coming from Upper PA.
Dave’s DNA test matched Mike’s and Steve’s ten out of twelve markers, which means that we probable shared a common ancestor further back in time. Dave’s has traced his family back to the middle of Pennsylvania, mid 1700’s, and has done extensive research on the PA Dunn’s.
Victor’s DNA test matched the Mike’s and Steve’s nine out of twelve markers, and Dave’s eight out of Twelve markers. Vic has his family traced back to Fredrick County, VA, mid 1700’s. Victor has done extensive research on the VA Dunn’s
From the results so far, it looks as though we have three separate Dunn lines, with distant connections. Because all of our lines come to a dead-end we cannot use our family linage as bench marks. It is for this reason that we offered to fund five DNA tests. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd.
