Project Background:

The Dement Surname Project was started in Nov 2003. I have been interested in DNA since early medical school days. Genealogy has been my hobby since early teens.
It has been an awesome journey and I have met many wonderful people and enjoyed many wonderful stories. I have corresponded with many Dement lines over the last 40 years, wondering how we all fit together. I have been corresponding with John M. Dement of Huntsville, Al for over 30 years. Since my family was in Morgan County Alabama in the early 1800's we have felt sure that we were related but have not been able to make that connection. Now through DNA, we think we are on the track to proving the relationship. We match exactly at the 25 markers. We are off by 3 at the 37. This means we most likely have a common ancestor with in the last 300 years. Now we hope to document other branches and roots.

Project Goals:

The goal of this project is to help establish the different branches of the Dement family tree and hook them to the appropriate roots. In the process we hope to understand better the migration and origins of the DEMENT Clan. Once we have established the relationships here on the continent I hope to connect with the Dements across the Atlantic in both England and France.

Project Results:

So far we have over 17 members of the John and Charity (Bridges) Dement line that are confirmed 100 % matches. We have two matchs from the Reuben Dement line that are 100% at 12 markers. We now have a 100% match for John M. of the Reuben line and the John Sidney line at 25 markers. That is really exciting. We feel these two lines are closely related. We now have several Haplotypes in the Charles and George lines showing 100% matches and several with 1-3 mutattions. We have a few lines that are not yet tied in.
