Background
Like most DNA projects The Cowan DNA Project is intended to marshall information about Cowan family
genealogy. The primary focus of attention is currently on YDNA, but some members also pursue
their genealogy using other DNA tools, such as mtDNA, etc.
With regard to YDNA results, we currently have results from 153 "Kits" included in the
the Cowan YDNA results. These kits have been orgaqnized into 9 distinct groups based on similarity
of their YDNA signatures. As with most YDNA projects, a substantial number of kits fall into the
"No Current Match" category.

Information about specific groups, and which kits fall into which group, can be obtained at

WeRelate, the largest of existing genealogy wiki's, is being used to gather and display
information about the various family lineages identified in the FTDNA Cowan Project.
As information becomes available about each of the lineages associated with the various kits, it
is entered into the appropriate WeRelate. An effort is being made to create a entry for each of
the earliest known ancestors indicated in each kit. Such links appear in Blue in the table on the
"YDNA. Cowan Groups" page, pointed to above. You can follow the links to the various person pages
to learn more about what is known about the individual. In many cases, substantial information has
been entered by various users of the WeRelate site about the persons descendants. As a result,
these entries provide more information than would otherwise be available.
Note that WeRelate is a "One Person, One Card" entry system. That is, each ancestor entered appears
only on a single entry in the WeRelate system. Additional information can be entered on that card
by anyone. Please note that because there is only a single entry card for each individual, care must
be taken to ensure that newly added information is accurate. For this reason, there is an emphasis
on providing original source documentation to show where information is coming from. Tertiary
sources, (such as personal communications, GedComs, undocumented familly trees, etc) should be
avoided.
Finally, a private email list has been established to further project goal. If you are interested in
participating in this list, contact wmwillis AT earthlink.net. The list is private, and its archives
are available only to list members.
