About us

On 30 January 1855, James Timbrell Worlton and his mother, Mary Parsons Worlton bought out most of the shares of Timbrells Court in Bath, Somerset England, that had long been in their Timbrell family. Soon, James Timbrell Worlton sold his shares of Timbrells Court and emigrated with his family to the United States of America. Thus started the Worlton surname from our branch of the family in the United States.

James Timbrell Worlton was born in Walcot, Bath, Somersetshire, England on 20 March 1821. He was the son of John Worlton, a shoemaker and Mary Parsons. John Worlton and Mary Parsons were married in Bath St. Michaels on 10 Oct 1819. John Worlton was listed as a bachelor of the parish of St. Michaels, Bath, Somerset, England and Mary Parsons was listed as a spinster of St. Michaels parish of Bath, Somerset, England. They were married by banns. The witnesses were John Purchase and Ann Watkins. In James Timbrell Worlton's biography it states that he, as a child, "moved with his father's family first to London and then later back to Bath." It also states that John Worlton died about 1837, when James Timbrell Worlton was only 16 years old. A legal document dated 25 March 1829, concerning Timbrell's Court, in Bath, states, "..."and John Worlton of Waterloo Road in the County of Surrey, shoemaker and which said John Worlton is the only son of Sarah Worlton formerly Timbrell, deceased of the 2nd part..." There is another legal document, date unknown, that states, concerning John Worlton (who married Mary Parsons): Left 3 children, one son now 17 years old named James Worlton, and died in 1834, intestate. Mary Parsons Worlton died in 1867 in Roath, Glamorgan, Wales, aged 71, widow of John Worlton, shoemaker. Informant was Sarah Tucker, present at death.

To John Worlton and Mary Parsons were born the following children:

1. James Timbrell Worlton born and baptized 2 Dec 1821 Countess of Huntingdon-Vinyard Chapel, Bath, Somerset, England
2. Sarah Worlton born 20 June 1822 baptized 2 Sept 1822 Countess of Huntingdon-Vineyard Chapel, Bath, Somerset, England. She married her sister's husband, John Tucker, after her younger sister died. John tucker and Sarah Worlton married 13 July 1880 at the district office in Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales. Sarah was aged 58 at the time. They had one child, Sarah Tucker born in 1857, and who died the same year, long before the couple married. The couple likely considered themelves married long before they actually did marry, as when Sarah's mother died, in 1867, she listed herself as Sarah Tucker, rather than Sarah Worlton. She was also listed as the wife of John Tucker in the 1861 and 1871 census of Roath, Glamorghan, Wales.
3. Ann Worlton born about 1825 of Walcot, Bath. She married John tucker on 8 April 1855 in the parish church in St.Mary the Virgin, Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales. She was aged 23 at the time. They lived in Roath, Glamorgan, Wales. She died 22 June 1856 in Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales. She had two children, William John Worlton Tucker, born in 1854, who lived to adulthood and married and Mary Ann Tucker, who was born in 1856, and died the same year.
3. Benjamin Timbrill Worlton born 16 Jun 1830 baptized 8 Aug 1830 Countess of Huntigdon-Vineyard Chapel, Bath, Somerset, England. He probably died very young, as his older brother, James Timbrell Worlton did not mention him.

John Worlton, (who was the husband of Mary Parsons) was born 22 May 1794, the son of John Worlton and Sarah Timbrell. John Worlton and Sarah Timbrell were married in Bath St. James Parish, Somersetshire, England on 26 July 1784. John Worlton was a bachelor of Walcot and Sarah Timbrell a spinster of Lyncome & Widcome parish of Bath. The couple was married by licence. The witnesses were Henry Spering and Jacob Isgar.

John Worlton and Sarah Timbrell had the following children:
1. James Worlton born 12 Sept 1786 in Lyncombe & Widcombe Bath, Somerset England. Witnesses: Rebecca Isgar, Elizabeth Collins midwife and Rebecca Timbrell (Bath Somerset Street Baptist church records.) Buried James Worlton son of John and Sarah Worlton aged one year of the parish of Lyncombe and Widcombe. (Bath Somerset Street Baptist Church Records)
2. Another James Worlton (birthdate or death date unknown)
2. John Worlton born 22 May 1794 in Lyncombe & Widcombe Bath, Somerset, England. Mr. Day Surgeon, Witness: Hannah Snaylom and Ann Sims. (Bath Somerset Street Baptist church records)
3. Jane Worlton born 5 May 1796 in Lycombe & Widcombe Bath, Somerset, England. Ann Timbrell, Elizabeth Timbrell and Mrs. Blatchly present at birth. (Bath Somerset Street Baptist Church records) Jane Worlton daughter of John Worlton was buried aged 15 months 11 Aug 1819 (Bath Somerset Street Baptist church Records)
In a legal document for Timbrells Court it states, "the said Sarah Timbrell intermarried with one John Worlton in the lifetime of my father, and that there was issue of such marriage four children viz-two named James and one named Jane all of whom died in their infancy and one son named John and no more."

Sometime after 1796, John Worlton left his family and sailed to America. The family tradition in our family was that he "supposed died at sea." However, in a legal document concerning Timbrell's Court it says, "John Worlton, son of Sarah Worlton...Sarah Worlton's husband left her for many years and died in America (the document then has 5 blank lines, then "her husband.) died 1 Sept 1819. Left one son who died in 1834, intestate. It is possible that John Worlton, sometime between 1796-1815, had other children in America. However, the death date of 1 Sept 1819 is more likely that of Sarah Timbrell Worlton, wife of John Worlton because the Baptist Church record lists her burial as, "Sarah Worlton, widow of Walcot parish, aged 55 6 September 1819." So, at least as of 1819, the family thought John Worlton had died.

We do not know where or when the John Worlton (married to Sarah Timbrell) was born. There is a family tradition that he came from a place called Forster. There are the following other Worlton surnamed people in Bath at the time our John Worlton was there, who were probably all siblings to our John Worlton:
