About us

The Withrow/Woodrow Surname Project seeks to use Y-DNA testing to accomplish the following goals: 1. Investigate the genetic relationship between known descendants of Robert Withrow of Augusta County, Virginia and later Greenbrier County, now West Virginia and known descendants of Robert and Jennet Witherow, immigrants from Ulster. 2. Investigate the genetic relationships between Withrows/Woodrows in the United States and those in Northern Ireland, Scotland and other areas of the United Kingdom. Membership is open to Y-DNA testers with the Withrow surname or the variants as listed in Black's Surnames of Scotland under the heading Woodrow. These include but are not limited to Withrow, Witherow, Woodrow, and Wodrow. Members test at a minimum of 37 markers Testing at 67 markers or above is strongly recommended. Non-Withrow/Woodrow surnamed Y testers who have Withrow/Woodrow matches at Y-67 and above are also welcome. Please note: This project does not include mitochondrial or autosomal (Family Finder) DNA testing. Withrow descendants and researchers are encouraged to also consider joining the Withrow Family Association. More info on that organization can be found here: http://withrows.org
