Interested in all variants of the Slaton Slatton Slayden name (including those starting with Sch-).
The purpose of the this Project is to create a database which will enable us to identify the various families bearing variants of like Slaton, Sladen and Slatton. The results might make it possible to tell which families are connected in the male line, and as the database grows, to differentiate between male branches. DNA testing can bolster or question the tracings of traditional "paper-trail" genealogical research. We are looking for additional participants from all national/ethnic backgrounds. Individuals interested in collaborating on family history and using genetic testing to assist our research efforts are encouraged to join. The administrators are happy to assist prospective members with the ordering process, if desired.
This Project makes it fairly clear that the many "trees" on FamilySearch, Ancestry, and other "collaborative" sites, showing a common male ancestor for all of the Sladding/Slayden/Slaten/Slayton/Slatton men found in 1680-1800 North America are obviously unresearched patching together of both real and completely fictitious family groupings. Separate yDNA groups might share a common male ancestor within the grouping, but obviously they cannot share a genetic common male ancestor within historic time with men in the other groups. Because of the idea of convergence among samplers, interpretations based solely on DNA remain in the realm of "probability," but not "proof," just as with conclusions based on "traditional" genealogy, but we hope that both of these tools and disciplines can be brought together for interpretation. We strongly encourage Big Y for males, because the terminal SNP research goes beyond the haplogroup predicted or tested from Y-STR testing.
Men can be assigned one of these surnames through formal or informal adoption, or be adopted "out" of the surnames, and yDNA can be helpful in determining whether either case applies.
Only Kit codes and paternal ancestry names volunteered to us will show in the grid to the public, not personal names of samplers. Some groupings (British-born Sladens, Massachusetts-based Slaytons) are not yet large enough samples to form theories as to origins; with more results that JOIN, this might change.

Results shown with blank Haplogroup are "transfers" from Ancestry, so their haplos appear in Most Distant Ancestor column. The Project has more results than shown, financial constraints preclude displaying all results at this time. What we ask for in return for your participation:
1) that you are willing to share your contact information with your cousins and work together to further your understanding of your Slaton/Slatton (etc) line and
2) that you provide the Project your proven or suspected "thumbnail" paternal line and grant permission to share your contact information with your genetic cousins.
It is expected that surname members will grant LIMITED or preferably ADVANCED access to the administrators. If any of this is unclear to you, contact one of the administrators before asking for an invitation to JOIN. Please consider arranging a Beneficiary at any FTDNA kit page under your management.
