About us

So far, the Piggin Y-DNA study has tested three men. It discovered two were definitely related. The other is not. So we have already established the Piggin/Piggins surname extends across two distinct genetic heritages. The study is about to tell us more, much more. For example, are there three or even four different Piggin heritages? Do Piggins of Black American heritage also have an English ancestor? Y-DNA testing is the only way to solve those issues.

Finding the answers will tell you more about yourself and where your surname comes from. In some families it will be a race against time, since the last males may soon die out. Y-DNA testing is affordable at last, and we have to collect the DNA right now to complete this research. The Piggin DNA Project welcomes all participants. We encourage you to join today! Follow the link at left: "Request to Join This Group". This is free, and you do not commit yourself to spending any money by simply joining.

Our project is still quite new, and we expect to have many exciting discoveries. You can see from the public Y-DNA Results page how many tests have been completed and the data they yielded up. Participating is an opportunity to uncover information not provided in the paper records, which will jump-start your research into your own family tree, and also assist the Piggin One-Name Study (contact the group administrator, Jean-Baptiste Piggin, at piggin@one-name.org for more information).

The Y-DNA test tells you about your direct male line, which would be your father, his father and so on, back in time. You must be male to take this test, and you should have the Piggin/Piggins/Piggon surname. If you believe there is a Piggin or variant in your direct male line, although you have a different surname, you are also welcome to participate. If you are female, you will need to find a direct-line male in your family to take the test on your behalf and represent your Piggin tree.

We encourage Piggin males who order a Y-DNA test at the present time to order at least 37 markers, if financially possible. If you order fewer markers, you can upgrade later, though this costs a little more. The test in the privacy of your home takes just a minute and you simply send back your sample by mail. Both males and females may also be interested in learning about their non-Piggin direct female line, which would be their mother, their mother's mother and back. You would order an mtDNA test to check this out.
