About us

Our initial goal was to identify the English roots of Samuel Hawes I, the Virginia Hawes line ancestor living in colonial Virginia in 1704, when he left the Quit Rent Rolls. He lived circa 1675-1769, dying in Virginia. Where he was born is not known. Family legend tells us that he was of English descent.

We are now interested in testing Haweses from all Hawes lines and with all Hawes spellings. Originally we thought that our goal could be accomplished by testing approximately six Hawes surnamed men; some known descendants of that Samuel Hawes and a few descendants of individuals suspected through the years of being his ancestors, relatives or siblings. After the results of those tests, we came to realize that a much larger test group was needed.

We were naive, in our original expectations. We still do not have proof of his ancestry or country of origin.

A secondary goal of our study as we proceed is to help Hawes descendants working on their family's history, to identify with their particular Hawes group or eliminate roadblocks to their research. We now realize that patterns will develop as more Hawes surnamed males are tested.

We welcome any Hawes surnamed men, of consenting age, to participate in our study. You may click on "Join this Group" on the left side of this page to join. You may contact the group administrator of this study directly, at the email address at the top of the page. A Y-DNA kit is required for this study; choices are 25-markers, 37-markers, & 67-markers. Eventually, the latter will provide the most opportunity for matches, but it is also the most expensive test of the three, and currently only one participant has ordered this test. Most of our participants have 37-marker results. Please contact the group administator for answers to any questions that you may have or for payment options. There are some group funds available for testing, at the group administrator's discretion.
