About us

The purpose of this project is to identify the distinct Barron Clans, family lines within each clan and to provide researchers with a scientific procedure to augment their Barron family relationships.

REQUIREMENT TO JOIN PROJECT: ALL GENDERS are welcomed and encouraged to join. All that is required is for the participant (or their proxy) to take or have taken either a Y-DNA or autosomal DNA test. Autosomal DNA tests taken thru other companies such as Ancestry.com or 23andMe.com can be uploaded for free to FamilyTreeDNA.com at https://www.familytreedna.com/autosomal-transfer. Then complete the Request to Join and provide the ancestral information of the person whose DNA is being used to join the project. An administrator will respond as soon as possible, usually between 30 min to a couple hours (we are in the EST).

If the participant hasn’t taken a DNA test, you can also order a test and have the person testing join the Barron DNA Project at the same time! Simply use this link: https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?code=B29034&Group=Barron

ANCESTRAL INFORMATION: What is most helpful is the lineage (if known) - such as:

- Lineage: Calvin Barnes b. 1822, Jones County, GA > John Barron b. 1843 > John Thompson Barron Sr abt. 1880, St. Louis, MO > Sarah Cooke (Barron) Jones b. 1903, Chicago, IL > Mary (Jones) Smith b. 1937, Corsicana, TX (the individual's DNA that is being used to join)

- Migration: GA > MO > IL > TX

OR

If you don’t know your lineage - providing the most recent Barron/Baron/Barnes ancestor you do know and any relevant information can help us identify your lineage.

- Example: My husband’s name is Charles Pierce Jones - his grandmother was Isabella Barron who was born in County Kilkenny, Ireland about 1887 and she and a sister moved to Nova Scotia. Isabella married Philip Jones and my husband’s dad, Pierce “Peter" Maurice Jones was born in Steuben, NY about 1924. Charles was born in Chicago. We think one of Isabella’s brothers came to the US before her and may have lived in New Orleans.

Y-DNA TESTS: For males interested in having their Y-DNA tested as part of the Barron Y-DNA project (or for females recruiting a male proxy) - it is important to understand that Y-DNA is passed from father to son thru all the generations. In other words: son of a son of a son…ONLY. For this reason, most Y-DNA testers will have the surname (or variant of) Barron. Yet due to various reasons some direct-paternal (Y-DNA) line males no longer have the surname of Barron. Thus, having the surname (or variant of) Barron is NOT a requirement to test with or join the Barron Y-DNA project.

If you are a female or are not a direct-line male but are interested in identifying your Barron Y-DNA Clan we encourage you to recruit a male relative (a proxy) that meets the below requirements.

All that is required for males (or recruited proxies) interested in testing with or joining the Barron Y-DNA Project is:

- to know or believe the tester is a direct-paternal (Y-DNA) line Barron male (son of the son of the son of…)

OR

- that the male tester has the surname (or variant of) Barron.
