Description
The Hartrum/Hotrum One-Name Study Surname Project welcomes all who are interested in discovering their common heritage through DNA testing. The Hartrum and Hotrum names appear to be unique to North America but the ethnic origin is said to be Palatine/German. We are hoping to discover the original ancestral name and location(s), as well as proving connections in our family tree, by means of Y-DNA, mtDNA, and autosomal-DNA (Family Finder) testing within this project.
We are aware that one HARTRUM male was adopted into a BRONSON family in 1835 and that he has living male BRONSON descendants. However, as there is a BRONSON Surname Project we recommend that these individuals get Y-DNA tested within it and if their results show a connection to the HARTRUMs then they are very welcome to also join this project.
Within the last 2 generations some HARTRUM families changed their surnames to HARTMAN. Similar to the above, we recommend that they initially join the HARTMAN Surname Project for their Y-DNA testing. However we do welcome any similar sounding surnames into this project, especially if there is no existing Y-DNA project for their surnames.
For Family Finder testing we require that individuals joining this project have a known HARTRUM or HOTRUM ancestor based on conventional paper genealogy.
Requirements
A Surname Project traces members of a family that share a common surname. They are of the most interest in cultures where surnames are passed on from father to son like the Y-Chromosome. This project is for males taking a Y-Chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) test. Thus, the individual who tests must be a male who wants to check his direct paternal line (father's father's father's...) with a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, Y-DNA67, or Y-DNA111 test and who has one of the surnames listed for the project. Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA. Females who would like to check their father's direct paternal line can have a male relative with his surname order a Y-DNA test. Females can also order an mtDNA test for themselves such as the mtDNAPlus test or the mtFullSequence test and participate in an mtDNA project. Both men and women may take our autosomal Family Finder test to discover recent relationships across all family lines.
