Description
We are still active in 2026 and seeking new members.
Membership is open to qualifying Y-DNA testers with a qualifying surname lineage. Your participation can illuminate your own research and make an invaluable contribution to ongoing research of any of the project surnames. If you are a direct Y-chromosome descendant from an ancestor whose surname qualifies you for membership, please take the Y-DNA test and join the project.Thank you!
Van Etten is a Dutch toponymic surname which probably associates our like-named ancestors with the municipality of Etten in the Netherlands. It is doubtful that all Van Etten lines trace to one individual common ancestor. Many unrelated families took the Van Etten name. There is a vast array of variant spellings and mutations of this surname. Our list only includes some of them.
This Y-DNA focused surname project is working to establish y-chromosome markers for all Van Etten lines worldwide, and to perhaps find surprising relationships between some of these Van Etten lines. This should establish a useful and lasting resource for researchers of these families. Please browse through the project website. Be sure to visit the Results and other links for more information about our discoveries and goals.
Results will be published on the project site. Members' identities always kept private.
Requirements
A Surname Project traces members of a family that share a common surname. They are of the most interest in cultures where surnames are passed on from father to son like the Y-Chromosome. This project is for males taking a Y-Chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) test. Thus, the individual who tests must be a male who wants to check his direct paternal line (father's father's father's...) with a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, Y-DNA67, or Y-DNA111 test and who has one of the surnames listed for the project. Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA. Females who would like to check their father's direct paternal line can have a male relative with his surname order a Y-DNA test. Females can also order an mtDNA test for themselves such as the mtDNAPlus test or the mtFullSequence test and participate in an mtDNA project. Both men and women may take our autosomal Family Finder test to discover recent relationships across all family lines.
