Description
Our original goal was to determine the correct ancestry of Garret Harsin, our Revolutionary War ancestor, and to determine whether he descended from the Harsen family of New York, or if he was really Andrew Harrison descended from the Harrison family of Berkeley Plantation in Virginia.
We compared 12 Y DNA markers between 2 Harsin and 2 Harsen family members to see if there is a connection. The result was negative, however we are not certain the Harsen individuals are descended from the New York knickerbocker line.
Recently we got a powerful match to a Hazer line, and are exploring that. There are some intriguing clues in the written records, as far back as we can find them, and the DNA. Waiting for the results on a BIG Y, but the 111 marker match so far only has a genetic distance of 2, so it's looking very strong.
As a result, we have opened the project to anyone with a surname Harsin/Harsen/Harson/Hazer so we can determine the interrelationships, if any, of these families. We seek to delineate what relationship, if any, exists between these families.
Any male with the Harsin, Harsen, or Harson surname is encouraged to participate.
Additionally, there may be some Harrison males out there who might wish to compare. If you are a descendent from Benjamin Harrison V, signer of the Declaration of Independence, there is a chance you may be related to those individuals with the Harsin surname via the male line. We would be very interested in comparing your results with our group.
Requirements
A Surname Project traces members of a family that share a common surname. They are of the most interest in cultures where surnames are passed on from father to son like the Y-Chromosome. This project is for males taking a Y-Chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) test. Thus, the individual who tests must be a male who wants to check his direct paternal line (father's father's father's...) with a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, Y-DNA67, or Y-DNA111 test and who has one of the surnames listed for the project. Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA. Females who would like to check their father's direct paternal line can have a male relative with his surname order a Y-DNA test. Females can also order an mtDNA test for themselves such as the mtDNAPlus test or the mtFullSequence test and participate in an mtDNA project. Both men and women may take our autosomal Family Finder test to discover recent relationships across all family lines.
