Description
The Correll/Coryell Y-DNA Project explores the ancestries of Coryells and Corrells through Y-DNA testing--especially Big Y 700--and traditional research. We aim to discover SNP paths and branching points, validate lines, uncover NPEs, and resolve NPEs. Our current focus is on Subgroups 1a, 1b, and 1c (see DNA Results).
We welcome new co-administrators keen on using Y-DNA science to explore other lines of Corrells not mentioned among our current interests (below). If interested, please contact the administrator.
Our current interests (as of Feb. 2022) include:
• Abraham Coriell (fl. 1702) of Middlesex County, NJ, who is said to be progenitor of the Coryell family in America. His descendants belong in Haplogroup E and match Avotaynu Jewish lineage AB-158.
• The West Sephardic Jewish Curiel family of Lisbon, Amsterdam, and Hamburg. Like the descendants of Abraham Coriell (fl. 1702), their male descendants belong in Haplogroup E and match Avotaynu Jewish lineage AB-158.
• Richard F. Coryell (1794-1845) of Warren Township, Somerset County, NJ. He is a brick wall. His descendants belong in Haplogroup I.
• John Coddington (1653-after 1715) of Boston, MA and Woodbridge, NJ. His descendants match descendants of Richard F. Coryell (1794-1845) in Haplogroup I. An NPE is suspected in Richard F. Coryell's direct paternal lineage involving a descendant of John Coddington.
• John Russell Coryell (1851-1921) of New York City and Reading, ME. His descendants belong in Haplogroup R.
• Dewitt Clinton Coryell (1822-1895) of Seneca County, NY, Scioto County, OH, and NM. He is a brick wall. His descendants match descendants of Abraham Coriell in Haplogroup E.
• Peter Demmoth Coryell (1824-1899) of Seneca County, NY, Scioto County, OH, and Des Moines, Iowa, who is said to be a brother of Dewitt. He is a brick wall. His descendants match descendants of Abraham Coriell (fl. 1702) in Haplogroup E.
• Abraham J. Correll (1810-1861) of Bedford, PA. He is a brick wall. His descendants match descendants of Abraham Coriell (fl. 1702) in Haplogroup E.
• William W. Correll (1812-1900) of Fayette County, PA and Poweshiek County, IA. He is a brick wall. His descendants match descendants of Abraham Coriell (fl. 1702) in Haplogroup E.
Requirements
A Surname Project traces members of a family that share a common surname. They are of the most interest in cultures where surnames are passed on from father to son like the Y-Chromosome. This project is for males taking a Y-Chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) test. Thus, the individual who tests must be a male who wants to check his direct paternal line (father's father's father's...) with a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, Y-DNA67, or Y-DNA111 test and who has one of the surnames listed for the project. Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA. Females who would like to check their father's direct paternal line can have a male relative with his surname order a Y-DNA test. Females can also order an mtDNA test for themselves such as the mtDNAPlus test or the mtFullSequence test and participate in an mtDNA project. Both men and women may take our autosomal Family Finder test to discover recent relationships across all family lines.
