<!--[if !supportLists]-->·                  <!--[endif]-->Total is the total number of people with that surname.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->·                  <!--[endif]-->Rank is the position in the list of names ordered by total (eg, a rank of 1 means that it's the most common name, and a rank of 10 means it's the tenth most common, etc).

<!--[if !supportLists]-->·                  <!--[endif]-->Frequency is the percentage of people with that surname.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->·                  <!--[endif]-->Per million people is the number of people with that surname per million of the population.

All of these are approximate figures, and the current figures especially so. The 1881 census figures are correct for what was recorded on the census, but we don't really know how accurate it was. At least, though the 1881 figures won't change, as it's a snapshot of a point in time. The current figures, by contrast, are variable according to births, deaths, migration and marriages, so the values shown here are only a best approximation to whatever was the case when the underlying data was collated and will not be the same as whatever the values are right now.

'N/A' indicates that we don't have data for this name in that country or time (usually because it's quite uncommon there and our stats don't go down that far). It doesn't mean that there's no-one there with that name at all!

For less common surnames, the figures get progressively less reliable the fewer holders of that name there are. This data is aggregated from several public lists, and some stats are interpolated from known values. The margin of error is well over 100% at the rarest end of the table!

It's possible for a surname to gain in rank and/or total while being less common per million people (or vice versa) as there are now more surnames in the UK as a result of immigration. In mathematical terms, the tail has got longer, with a far larger number of less common surnames.

Notes

County and town names are as usedon the 1881 census, and may not necessarily correlate with modern names andborders. Where a Scottish county is now known by a significantly differentname, the modern name is shown in brackets. Welsh counties are shown in bothEnglish and Welsh names.

The Total Occurrencestables show which counties and towns contained the highest number of peoplewith the surname TYLER. This is obviouslybiased towards counties and towns that have more people in them overall, but itdoes show where the majority of people called TYLERlived at the time of the 1881 census.

The Frequencytables show which counties and towns had the highest proportion of people withthe surname TYLER. These are theplaces where you would be most likely to find someone called TYLER,if you picked people at random from the population.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->·                 <!--[endif]-->The Total columnshows the total number of people in that county or town with this surname. Forexample, there were 87 people called TYLER in Rutland at the time of the 1881census.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->·                 <!--[endif]-->The Frequencycolumn shows the percentage of people in this county or town with this surname. For example, a frequency of 0.4056 in Rutland means that 0.4056% of the peoplein Rutland on census day were called TYLER.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->·                 <!--[endif]-->The Index columnshows the relative probability of finding someone called TYLER in this county or town, compared with the probability of finding them anywhere in Britain as a whole. An index of 1 means that if you pick someone at random from this county ortown, you have exactly the same probability of picking someone called TYLER a if you picked at randomfrom the whole of the UK. If the index is higher than 1, then you are morelikely to find someoen called TYLER herethan if you picked from the UK as a whole, and if it's lower then you are lesslikely. The actual figure shows the level of probability - for example, afigure of 2 would indicate that you are twice as likely to find someone called TYLER here than in the UK as awhole, and 10 would make it ten times as likely. The value of 13.7389 inRutland means that you are 13.7389 times as likely to find someone with thesurname of TYLER in Rutland than you wouldbe in the whole of the UK.

The maximum Index values tend to behigher for towns than counties, as a single extended family in a small town cancomprise a significant proportion of the total population. For less commonsurnames, it's quite likely that all the residents of a small town who sharedthat name were related.

Tyler

Posted on17novembre 2010 by HeraldrysInstitute

The name‘Tyler’ originates from England. It is derived from the occupational name for amaker or layer of tiles, derived from the agent derivative of the MiddleEnglish word ’tile’ (from the Old English word ‘tigele’, from the Latin word‘tegula’, a derivative of ‘tegere’ meaning to cover). In the Middle Ages tileswere widely used in floors and pavements, and to a lesser extent in roofing, where they did not really come in to their own until the 16th century.Variants: ‘Tylor’, ‘Tiller’, Compiled information from Historical and Privatearchive’s has confirmed that the name ‘Tyler’ and or it’s variant’s, dates asfar back as the 14th century were a ‘Wat Tyler’, (died 1381) , the leader ofthe English Peasant’s Revolt, is referred to in Thomas Walsingham´s ChroniconAngliae as ‘Walterus Helier’, which suggests that the name was not a hereditarysurname but simply a refrence to his occupation. The exact period of settlementin North America has not been definately determined but Information extractedfrom Public and Civil registry archive’s confirm that one of the first settlerswas a certain ‘Job Tyler’, aged 20, believed to have been from Shropshire,England, emigrated to North America in 1638, and settled in 1639 at Andover,Massachsetts. He died in 1700 having fathered eight children. ‘Tyler’ is the’446th’ most common surname in North America.
