Background

In the autumn of 2003 the Terriot Acadian Family Society organized a project to select certain males from their organization from diverse lineages with the surname (or any variant) to submit their DNA for testing. To objective was to establish a Y-DNA Benchmark for the Terriot family. All six of the first selected participants had genealogical trees "on paper" that connected them to Jehan Terriau, the progenitor of the family. The DNA results all matched, except for two minor mutations in one Louisiana line. The seventh subject was an adoptee with a different surname, but whose test results also matched. There are now 21 individuals, and all but one have significant matches, and can also trace their paternal lineage back to Jehan Terriau of Acadia. The small mutations make possible the differentiation of various lines.
