NOTE:
TheChronicle of William Stone/s-Governor of Maryland, 1648-1654

William M. Stone, the authorof The Chronicle of Thomas Stone of Hamilton Parish in Colonia Virginia, has done it again with his groundbreaking researchin The Chronicle of William Stone/s- Governor of Maryland, 1648-1654.This well-documented early history of the Stones in England and their arrivalin America features never before transcriptions of early wills written inMiddle English and other key historical records that took months for Stone totranscribe. Stone's research on his legacy project corrects earlier historieswith supporting documentation and fills in the gaps, while greatly expandingthe knowledge of the Stone DNA Group 7 from Lancashire, Cheshire and London,England to ColonialVirginia and Maryland.

Thisheirloom-quality book is as important to the Stone history as The Chronicleof Thomas Stone of Hamilton Parish in Colonial Virginia was inunderstanding the family link between the North Carolina, South Carolina andKentucky Stones. The research discoveries provided in this book lead Stoneto a simple conclusion: the preponderance of historical facts both in officialrecords of the Stone family, as well as closely associated families, stronglysuggest that Stone DNA Group 7 is descended from Governor William Stone.

TheChronicle of Thomas Stone of Hamilton Parish in Colonial Virginia

Also offered for sale isan updated and expanded edition of Stone's earlier 2009edition of The Chronicle of Thomas Stone of Hamilton Parish in Colonial VirginiaThisupdated edition presents new insights that bridge Thomas of HamiltonParish to his great-grandfather, Governor William Stone, and to his uncleThomas Stone, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The book covers Thomas Stone Jr. who married Mary Butler andremained in Fauquier County. Virginia; William who married Hannah Conway andlived in Surry County, North Carolina; and John Stone who married MildrugeCorder and lived FauquierCounty, Virginia and later in Laurens County, South Carolina. The bookretains the earlier information with a wide assortment of records and drawingsfrom deed abstracts, original grants, family wills and probate records,Revolutionary War records and historical letters. It also provides maps, images, and color photos of the actual Licking Run and Carters Run homesteadsin Virginia. Research for this book was conducted over several years on site in the countieswhere the family members lived. Newman’s archives in Maryland were alsoreviewed, as well as major state archives such as the Library of Virginia, theNorth Carolina Archives in Raleigh, and the South Carolina Archives inColumbia.

Eachheirloom-quality hardcover book can be purchased separately or as a two-volumeset. Each hardcover book will be printed on 8 1/2” by 11,” 60 pound paperwith top-quality library binding. Quantities are limited. James Hilliard Stone, age 72 in 1898, gave the following information. As his grandmotherhad died before he was born, he had forgotten her name and the given name ofhis grandfather (great-grandfather) who was killed in the War of Independence.James Hilliard Stone said:

"The family tradition is that Capt. John Stone was killed by the Pequot Indiansof Connecticut, and Tories at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. Supposedly,he is the father of William Stone. Capt. John Stone had made a stump speech forfreedom and independence, and on his way home, was assassinated. TheIndependents found and killed his slayers. His widow moved from VA to SC whenWilliam Stone was five, right after the death of her husband. Later, WilliamStone went back to VA to marry a Miss Lynch of Lynchburg, VA. William Stone wasa Baptist minister and farmer, and built what is called Cedar Shoal BaptistChurch at Spartanburg, SC."

John Ellis Stone, one of William's great-grandsons wrote in 1918: "Williamand his brothers lived in Henrico Co., VA. Around 1800, they all moved to SC onthe Yadkin River (described as the Rice District); later to NC, East TN and CentralKY where the brothers separated. It is probable that they settled: one brotherin Bullitt Co., KY, one brother in Warren Co., KY, and abt. 1805-6,William andhis brother, Christopher, moved to Hardin Co., KY, to that part which laterbecame Grayson Co." In the 1850 Grayson Co. census, both Aaron and HoseaStone declared their place of birth as SC, so this would place William Stoneand his brothers in SC between 1789 and 1792.

In the 1880 census of Spartanburg Co., SC, the birthplace of CharlesandLouisa's parents is SC. The family story is that Louisa’s maiden name wasalsoStone. But they were supposedly not blood relations. Another family legendsaysthat Benjamin, fleeing a possible murder charge ran off to New York. MyAuntand Benjamin’s son Frank were pen pals during one of the wars. I have locatedwhatappears to be Benjamin and his family including Frank in Syracuse NY andlaterin New York City. Both times Benjamin claimed SC as his birthplace.
