ROSE DNA PROJECT
We welcome anyone with the surname ROSE or variations listed in our Surnames above to participate in the Rose DNA Project. Since surnames are passed down from father to son like the Y-chromosome, participation in this project requires testing the Y-DNA of a male who carries the Rose surname or variations listed above. We started modestly in 2001, attempting to establish the identity of the paternal lineage of one Samuel Rose of Manchester VT. Success was attained very swiftly and conclusively, far exceeding our expectations.
The project has grown immensely since that time. Many countries have been listed as the origin of Rose and related families (see Surnames above), plus we have many participants from countries all over the world. Some of these countries are Australia, England, Germany, Ireland, Scotland, The Netherlands and the United States to name a few. As we receive matches, we designate a group for these matches for which you can explore possibilities within one's group. If each participant submits his lineage, then genealogies can be compared!
Several of the Rose families are genetically similar, so we recommend the Y-DNA 37 marker test as a minimum. The Y-DNA 67 marker test provides a higher resolution for identifying common ancestry, and can be beneficial in providing more definitive and conclusive results.
Although a female can not take a Y-DNA test, she can sponsor a test for a male who carries the Rose surname or variations listed above. Both males and females can take mtDNA and Family Finder tests.
test traces your direct paternal line (your father, his father, etc). Only males can take this test.
test traces your direct maternal line (your mother, her mother, etc). Both males and females can order an mtDNA test.
The Family Finder
test is used to trace all of the lines of your family, both paternal and maternal, and all those in between (i.e. paternal grandmother's father's line). This test can be especially useful for those who are not matching on Y-DNA tests, or who have hit "brick walls" in their genealogy research. Both males and females can order a Family Finder test.
