About us

The NULL448 Project was established on 23 May 2006 to coordinate results for those who have a null value at DYS 448. The first known grouping of null448s were identified in the Tucker Surname DNA Project in January 2006. This family group of Tuckers is known as the "ChasCitCo Tuckers" - visit the Tucker DNA Project website, and click on "Results" to learn more. In 2006, there were at least 30 individuals in Family Tree DNA's database who have a null value at DYS 448.
"Null" is the term used when the lab is unable to determine a value for a marker. A null value may be caused by missing genetic material, or a SNP near the DYS448 location. The SNP prevents a value from being detected.

SNPs and nulls, like other marker variations, are passed down on the Y-chromosome from father to son.

If the University of Arizona lab fails to detect a value at DYS448, they will test the sample two more times before declaring it to have a "null" value. This means that very few results are mis-identified as a null448 when they are not.

With older identified nulls, FTDNA assigned a value based upon a person's closest matches. The system has been updated to display a "0" (zero) value.

Family Tree DNA will send you a notification of your null448 and we welcome you to add your results to the NULL448 project. Click on the blue "JOIN" icon at the top of your "MyFTDNA" page and select the NULL448 project. Participation in the NULL448 Project allows for results to be studied and diagrammed. Participants will be notified of any new and available data pertaining to their null448. Our deep gratitude and thanks to the founder of the NULL439 Project, Leo Little, for his data compilations and mentoring resulting in the establishment of the NULL448 Project!
