About us

Our results will reflect the tests of all of those who join the project. In order to protect privacy and provide groupings of general interest, the charts shown in the following section will be labeled with the oldest known person in the line of each person who is tested. Hopefully we will eventually have representatives of all of the current Hotchkiss lines. So far, we have the results of twelve people's tests, which show that our name includes people belonging to two haplogroups: I1a and R1b1b2. At least one I1A tested so far has been shown to be I1a-N-D (or Norse Danish). This is distinguished by a DSN 462 value of 13 as opposed to 12, which clearly splits the I1a population from Denmark and north from those to the South. R1b is the most common haplogroup in Europe, and certain subclades of R1b1b2 seem to be very strongly associated with the Normans, indicating that perhaps we should get some deep-clade tests done. Both of these would have been common among the the Vikings or Normans. This agrees with our findings regarding the name likely being of Norman origin. We will update this section with further findings on our own Hotchkiss lines as they become available. National Geographic's Genographic Project says that our I1a ancestors carried the following chromosome markers which show their journey through history: M168 > M89 > M170 > M253 Research on these markers apparently tell the story of how our early ancestors made their way out of the Rift Valley of Africa, and across the then lush land of the Middle East only to become isolated from Africa by the drought that turned it into the desert it is today, before entering Europe during the Ice Ages. Of special interest to those with the Hotchkiss name, the Vikings are said to carry one of these markers. One way to order your tests is to first join the National Geographic Project, and then have your data transfered to FamilyTree DNA. This will get you well started with a 12 marker test. The following chart gives details on the ancestry of our members so far. Since we are publishing "Most Distant Ancestor", this is showing the line from that ancestor on toward the member, but hopefully not coming forward enough to impend on privacy. For those which had records prior to the 1700's, we cut-off at the first person born in the 1800's. For the others we went on a bit. # Kit Most Distant Male Ancestor Haplogroup 1 91111 John Hotchkin, of Essex Co, England (bef 1633) I1a - John Hotchkin (bef 1633-1681) - Joseph Hotchkin (1675-1756) and Elizabeth - Noah Hotchkin (1716-1783) and Hannah - Noah Hotchkin (1741-1810) and Elizabeth - Noah Hotchkin (1769-1851) and Merab - Abram Eli Hotchkin Sr (1802-1858) and Electa Bigelow 2 N43540 Thomas Hotchkiss of Madeley (abt 1626) I1a-N-D (Norse-Denmark) (Me) - Thomas Hotchkiss (abt 1626-1711) and Mary Grayette - John Hotchkiss (abt 1662) and Mary - John Hotchkiss (abt 1689) and Elizabeth Manton - Edward Hotchkiss (abt 1713) and Ann Hatton - Cornelius Hotchkiss (abt 1739) and Janet Stewart - Edward Hotchkiss (bef 1770- ?) and Margaret Baad - Cornelius Hotchkiss (abt 1807-1872) and Rebecca Simpson 3 84795 John Hotchkiss of Whitchurch (abt 1580) R1b1b2 - John Hotchkiss (abt 1580 - 1665) and Margaret Nevett - Samuel Hotchkiss (abt. 1622-1663) and Elizabeth Cleverly - Ensign Joshua Hotchkiss (1651-1722) and Mary Pardee - Stephen Hotchkiss (1681-1755) and Elizabeth Sperry - Capt.
