About us

The Hauri DNA Project is one of the oldest surname projects. We started in 2000 when test results matched Justin (Howery) Swanstrom, of Denver, with Fred Haury, of Albuquerque. The two men are thought to share a common ancestor who lived in Switzerland some time before about 1500. Test results showed that they match on 12 out of 12 locations on the y chromosome. This means there is a 90% probability they share a common ancestor within the past 23 generations, and a 95% probability they share a common ancestor within the past 29 generations. Subsequent testing has been consistent with this result.
