Ely Carroll DNA is a unique Y-chromosome DNA found in a descendant of Charles Carroll of
Carrollton and shared by men with names that descend from Ely Carroll and Cian
who lived in 4th-century Ireland. Names include: Bohan/Bowes, Carroll, Flanagan,
Meagher/Mahar, Murphy, Redmond.
The Ely Carroll group has the DF21 SNP and is in the R1b1a2a1a1b4 haplogroup. Key markers are: 390=25 and 492=11.
The DF21 SNP is downstream of the L21 SNP. Other groups that have the DF21 SNP include Clan Colla and the Little Scottish Cluster. DF21 may represent 10 percent of L21 SNP. The DF21 SNP is estimated to be 3,000 years old, compared with 4,000 for the L21 SNP.
You are urged to order the DF21 SNP test. To order the DF21 test, go to ORDER ADVANCED TESTS (not ORDER ADVANCED SNP TESTS nor ORDER DEEP CLADE TEST). The cost is $39. You also are urged to join the DF21 project at FTDNA as well as the L21 project.
There are several SNPs downstream of DF21: P314.2, Z246 (DF25 and DF5), L720, and S190. None of these SNPs is positive for Ely Carroll. For more details, see Results.
Modal DNA. The modal DNA for Ely Carroll can be found at Ysearch: TG7S3. The genetic distances of project members can be found under Results.
Historic Names. The modal was developed from 33 people with six historic Ely Carroll surnames who have tested 67 markers:
Other historic Ely Carroll surnames for which DNA has not yet been found are: Corcoran, Healy, Nevin, O'Connor, O'Hara.

Database. As of October 2013, a total of 76 people have been found to have Ely Carroll DNA, all of whom have tested 67 markers and 20 of whom have tested 111 markers. The marker values and genetic distances can be seen by clicking the following links. Genetic distances are calculated with the McGee Utility with the hybrid mutation method. For details, see the separate web page on Ely Carroll DNA.
Multiple Origins of Carrolls. The Carrolls of Ely Carroll are 10% of all Carrolls. See the Carroll DNA project.
Ely Carroll Yahoo Group. Martha Bowes, Peter Carroll, and Peter Biggins have a web page for Ely Carroll at Yahoo Groups with messages, files, and links relating to Ely Carroll. The purpose of the group is to learn about Ely Carroll from material submitted by group members and ask questions of group members. You can send messages to the group, respond to messages submitted by others, add Internet links and files relating to Ely Carroll, and learn from links and files submitted by others.
