Interpreting your Y-DNA haplogroup test result nomenclature
FTDNA indicates your specific Y-DNA Haplogroup information on your personal web page. After login in you can access this information by clicking on the Haplogroup tab which will open to a discussion of your individual results in relation to a brief account of the origin and history of your test result Haplogroup/subclade.
Depending on the test level you chose your test results were either estimated by comparing against known Short Tandem Repeats (STR) Haplotypes or they were confirmed by Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) tests. This haplogroup/subclade will be represented by a symbol such as E1b1b1.
When viewing the E-M35 Project “Y-Results” table you will see your test information arrayed in Kit #, surname, haplogroup designation, and haplotype marker sequence in ranked location amongst test results of other group members in the appropriate haplogroup/subclade category. If the haplogroup label is displayed in red color it means the designation was predicted; if the label is displayed in green it indicates that some sort of SNP test has been performed on that sample.

Why do I see more than one haplogroup/subclade symbol?
Family Tree DNA recently adopted the new Y-DNA tree and nomenclature as published by the YCC Consortium and in accordance with the International Society of Genetic Genealogy (ISOGG) for the E1b1b1 (M35) Haplogroup and its subgroups and subclades.
Our intent is to coordinate the SNP nomenclature from various laboratories with current subclade designations as/when proposed by ISOGG. Following is a discussion of the nomenclature terms used at this time :

Y-DNA Haplogroup E-M35 and its subclades
E1b1b1 Backbone M35+ A SNP test has been conducted but only to the M35+ positive (derived) level and no further (deep clade) testing has been done downstream of this node to determine the presence of additional mutations.
E1b1b1* = M35+* A deep-clade test has been conducted and found to be positive (derived) for M35 but negative (ancestral) for all further downstream SNPs currently known.
E1b1b1a = M78+ A deep-clade test has been conducted downstream of M35+ to the next depth level and has been found to be positive (derived) for M78 and negative for all other major haplogroup subclades. Not tested for the V-Series SNPs.
E1b1b1a = M78+* Vneg An extended deep-clade test has been conducted downstream of M78+ and has been found to be negative (ancestral) for all further downstream SNPs currently known.
E1b1b1a1 = M78+V12+ An extended deep-clade test has been conducted downstream of M78+ and has been found to be positive (derived) for V12 and negative (ancestral) for M224 and V32.
E1b1b1a2 = M78+V13+ An extended deep-clade test has been conducted downstream of M78+ and has been found to be positive (derived) for V13/V36 and negative (ancestral) for V27 and P65.
E1b1b1a3 = M78+V22+ An extended deep-clade test has been conducted downstream of M78+ and has been found to be positive (derived) for V22 and negative (ancestral) for M148 and V19.
E1b1b1a4 = M78+V65+ An extended deep-clade test has been conducted downstream of M78+ and has been found to be positive (derived) for V65.
E1b1b1b = M81+M183+ A deep-clade test has been conducted downstream of M35+ and has been found to be positive (derived) for M81 and M183 and negative (ancestral) for M107 and M165.
E1b1b1c* = M123+* A deep-clade test has been conducted downstream of M35+ and has been found to be positive (derived) for M123 but negative (ancestral) for M34.
E1b1b1c1 = M123+M34+ A deep-clade test has been conducted downstream of M35+ and has been found to be positive (derived) for both M123 and M34 but negative (ancestral) for M136, M84 and M290.
Predicted E1b1b1 In this group of haplotypes no SNP tests have been performed yet and all subclades are/could be present.
Predicted E1b1b1a In this group of haplotypes no SNP tests have been performed yet but haplotype values and similarity to other SNP tested haplotypes allow FTDNA to predict them as M78+.
Predicted E1b1b1b In this group of haplotypes no SNP tests have been performed yet but haplotype values and similarity to other SNP tested haplotypes allow FTDNA to predict them as M81+/M183+.
Predicted E1b1b1c1 In this group of haplotypes no SNP tests have been performed yet but haplotype values and similarity to other SNP tested haplotypes allow FTDNA to predict them as M123+/M34+.
SNP Test In Progress This list includes haplotypes that are being deep-clade tested. When results become available for each haplotype they are moved to their corresponding group above.
***Notes*** Among the SNP tested groups you will ocassionally find a record with a red haplogroup designation label, meaning that no deep-clade tests have been performed on them. However, we were able to asign them to specific groups either because a relative has been SNP confirmed of belonging to such group or because we've been informed that a SNP test has been performed at another laboratory which FTDNA does not reflect in their records.
