The Bauman ydna Project  at FTDNA

Dedicated to identifying the male lines of German and Swiss families

                                            Newsletter March 2014

In October of 2007 the Bauman Project was started and today we have 120 members, all trying to find our connections to the past.

One of our goals is to get representative Ydna from all the early major Germanic Bowman/Bauman family lines of Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland to use as a base to identify the many Bowman families that exist today in America.  So far, we have found there are more of these early families than was original thought.  Following is a list of some of the major Bowman families we have ydna and some that we really need ydna.

Lebanon County Pa

1.    Johannes Bauman 1705-1785

2.    Hedrick Bauman  ???—1763

·        Jacob Bowman who owned land there early—we need to identify this Jacob Bowman  and get ydna on this family

Berks County Pa

1.    George Bauman 1712-1786  (Greenwich Ts): to Rockingham Co VA

2.    Casper Bauman 1724-1789  (Washington Ts)

3.    Christian Bauman 1724-1790  (Cumru Ts)

4.    Peter Bowman 1763-1830  (Maiden Creek Ts):  to Ohio

Lancaster County Pa

1.    Wendel Bauman 1681-1735 (West Lampeter Ts): But we need more of this line to test to establish which ydna is the right one.

·        John Bauman 1685-1738 (Salisburg Ts): We need ydna from this part of the Wendell line

·        John Bowman 1703-1771 (Ephrata Ts):  We really need ydna from this family

Maryland

1.    Jacob Bowman 1718-1803  (NW Washington co):  To Rockingham Co Va

2.    Hans Bowman 1715-1795  (Williamsport, Washington Co): to Tennessee, we need more on this line

3.    Benedict Bauman 1743-1810  (Eastern Washington Co)

·        Bathasar Bowman 1752-1823 (Washington Co):  no ydna from this family

·        Henry Bowman 1753-1836  (SE Washington Co): no ydna, might be related to Jacob 1718-1803

·        There are several other Bowmans in Maryland that we need ydna.

Rockingham Co Va

1.    Jacob bowman 1718-1803 (Linville creek area): We have ydna on three of the 5 sons listed, Need ydna from Joseph 1757-1838 and Henry 1753-1830

2.    George Bauman 1712-1786  (Timberville)

·        Peter bowman 1763-1824:  We need ydna on this line, might be related to Jacob 1718-1803 or maybe not

·        George Adam Bowman 1724-1797 (woodstock area): we need ydna

Franklin Co Va

1.     John Bowman 1764-1804 (franklin co va)

Virginia

·        There are other Bowmans in Va that we do not have ydna

North Carolina

1.     Cornelius Bowman 1740-1785 (of Wilkes Co NC to Ky)

2.     George Daniel Bowman 1740-1811 (of Lincoln Co NC)

We have Ydna on many other bowmans but many of them do not go back to the early 1700s.  We are listing only the oldest lines.  Also remember we are trying to do Germanic Bowman lines, so we do not have the English type Bowman lines at the Bauman project.

Results chart set up:

Projects can set up their results charts in different ways.  At the Bauman project we are making separate groups of the related testees on the ydna classic results chart.  Most groups represent a matching family group.

Rather than listing the oldest known ancestor we have starting listing the earliest 3 or 4 oldest ancestors with the information on the oldest, listed in the header of the group.  This helps show what part of the line the testee is when there are many in the same group.

January 2011

During 2010 several new relatives of the George Bowman born 1712 joined the Bauman Group, which extended the line into previously unknown areas. As of January 2011 there were fifteen testees of this line.

Three descendants of Christian Bowman born 1698 of Shenandoah, Va. tested and were joined by another testee who matched their yDNA. This gives us four testees for the Christian Bowman line.  We can now say that George and Christian are both of German descent and live fairly close together but do not have a common ancestor in well over a 1,000 years. In the last 5-7 generations these families did intermarry.

There are still three other Bauman lines in the Rockingham and Shenandoah, Va. area that should be tested to see if they are related or not to the above.

So the work goes on.
