About us

The South DNA Project, was established to reconstruct ancestral links to South family researcher's internationally.

The surname is locational, and so rightly will represent several unique kinship group's.

Of interest is that the armigerous family of South is represented in our project. This family is held to have an Anglo-Scandinavian origin as both the Y-DNA and origin of the family name, once recorded as Bysouth [bisuth], 'south of the homestead', are supportive. 'By', or homestead, farm and later village, is usually found as a Scandinavian suffix  within various British surnames, such as Sotheby. Here we see the Old Norse word 'By', as a prefix. This family migrated from the east coast of England to Australia in 1911.

Other historic families under the name are found in the USA, who descend from the Confederate general, General John South.
The various descendants of this family are well recorded by an active American South family history group.
This family shares no genetic link with the armigerous South family.

We look forward to welcoming South family researchers to the Project.
