Our project started in 2009, and we have made many exciting discoveries. 

The Ricketts Family History Project is a global project which combines research with genealogy DNA testing.  This combination of research and the latest technology provides discoveries not possible from the paper records alone. 

We have tested men residing in: Australia, Canada, Channel Islands, England, France, Ireland, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Peru, Scotland, South Africa, Switzerland, United States, and Wales.

Participating is an opportunity to discover information not provided in the paper records. 

There are three levels of discovery:

    *  about your family tree
    *  about your surname
    *  about your distant origin

The information from a genealogy DNA test will help with the research of your family tree. We will also discover which family trees are related. As the project progresses, the results for the various family trees will provide information on the evolution and origins of the surnames, and most likely, for trees that migrated, a connection to the ancestral country.

The Ricketts Family History Project collaborates with the Ricketts Surname Study.   Salli (nee Ricketts) Dyson has been researching the surname Ricketts and variants for over 40 years. You can learn more about this significant research, by visiting the Surname Study web site.

Your participation will be an invaluable contribution to both your family tree research and towards discovering more information about the surnames and the origins of the surnames.

Depending upon your family tree, we may hold information from research that may help you with your family tree.

The Y-DNA test tells you about your direct male line, which would be your father, his father, and back in time. You must be male to take this test, and you should have one of the surnames shown. If you believe there is a Ricketts or variant in your direct male line, although you have a different surname, you are also welcome to participate. If you are female, you will need to find a direct line male in your family tree to participate and represent your tree.

We encourage males to order a Y-DNA test for 37 markers, if possible. If you order fewer markers, you can upgrade later, though this costs a little more.

Surnames in the Project

The surnames included in the project represent both known variants, such as Rickett and Ricketts, and suspected variants.  Research shows that surnames such as Rackett or Raggett are usually present in an area with Ricketts.  Including these surnames in the project enables us to use DNA testing to determine if these other surname forms are previously unknown variants.

Sponsored test kits may be available

Paid test kits are available for males with one of the surnames shown above.  To be eligible, either your tree hasn't tested yet, or more males are needed to represent major branches of your tree.  In addition, your direct male line should not have any events that break the link between the surname and the Y-chromosome, such as adoption, name change, or illegitimacy where the male child takes the mothers surname.  Please contact us to determine if you are eligible for a paid test kit.  We will research your direct male line to make a determination. 

If you are eligible for a paid test kit, a test kit will arrive in the mail with directions to swab the inside of your mouth.  Once your result is back from the lab, you receive your Research Report and DNA Report in the mail.  The Research Report includes copies of the records found during research.

If you are not eligible for a paid test kit, you will receive in the mail a professionally prepared Research Report with copies of the supporting records.

DNA testing for genealogy provides information not available from the paper records.  This is an opportunity to make discoveries about your family tree, about your surname, and about your distant origin.  Since you will match or be a close match to those to whom you are related, the results contain no personal information.

mtDNA testing and the Family Finder test

Both males and females may also be interested in learning about their direct female line, which would be their mother, their mother's mother, and back in time. Both men and women inherit mtDNA, although only women pass it on. To explore your direct female line, you would order a mtDNA test. For matches in a genealogical time frame, order the mtDNA Full Sequence test.

Both males and females may be interested in the Family Finder test, which is an autosomal test which looks across all branches of your family tree, for about 5 generations back, sometimes more.

Males can easily add either of these tests to their Y-DNA kit.  For females, please join the Ricketts-AllOthers Project.  Males who do not have the Ricketts or variant surname today, and the surname is further back in your tree, please join the Ricketts-AllOthers Project.
