The Plunkett Surname Project Administrator does not recommend the 12 marker or 25 marker yDNA test because it is not specific enough and would only show that the Plunketts are related to many of European descent. A minimum of a 37-marker test is needed for genetic genealogy, and a 67 marker test is better yet. If a male matches the Meath/Louth Plunkett group, a Y-67 marker test will be required.
Women can also order a test for themselves such as the full scan mtDNA test (recommended for genetic genealogy), but the results of this test cannot determine Plunkett lineage, only the lineage of their mother’s female lineage (mother's mother's, mother, etc). The full scan mtDNA test is recommended because the mtDNAPlus test is not likely to obtain matches within a genealogical time frame.
The Family Finder DNA test can be used by men or women to detect Plunkett ancestry to about the 4th gt grandparents, and occasionally farther back.
