The Murdock (and variations) Family Tree & DNA Linkage Project invites and welcomes the participation of all individuals interested in tracing their ancestry. Within this Project, we're focusing on all of the surname spelling variations (see the table of variations, above) that have been found for members of this large and important surname group in a wide variety of paper records that have been created since the 14th century. We invite and encourage you to join and participate today! The underlying documentary based portion of this research project has been running since 1984, and began to incorporate DNA evidence in 2008. We could use your help and participation to ensure that our Project grows, that discoveries can be made, and that our goals can be met as time proceeds.
DNA coding results for each participant will be posted at this site as test kits are returned. Through the coding of an individual's DNA we hope to discover who might be genetically related to whom, which will in turn help confirm or transform paper-based research initiatives. It's our hope that broader views of family relationships and migrations across longer periods of time will become visible, and that we can begin to formulate more accurate and conclusive descriptions about the evolution and origins of the surname in all its variant forms. Participating will provide an opportunity to discover information not discernible through research in paper records alone.
Y DNA test results provide facts about a male's direct ancestral male line, and would be virtually identical for himself, his father, his grandfather, his great-grandfather, and so on, back through time (some variation is to be expected, in selected markers, and should not be treated with alarm). Of course, one must be a male in order to take this test, and receive meaningful results. Anyone wishing to participate in the yDNA component of our Project should either wear one of the surnames shown in the table of variations, or be a descendant of someone fathered by someone with one of these surnames, even if adopted. If you're a male, and believe there is someone in your direct male line who was named Murdock, or Muddock, or Murdick, or any one of the many other spelling versions known - even if you have a different surname, you are very welcome to participate. Testing to the 'Big-Y' or 700 marker level offers the most precise evidence currently available on male lineages and relationships, but testing to the Y-111 level could be considered as a current minimum standard.
If you're female, you can also participate in the Y DNA aspect of our Project - but you would have to identify and encourage a male in your family tree to submit DNA samples and represent your tree. We encourage males who wish to join our project, to order a 111 marker Y DNA test, or for more precision, a 'Big-Y 700 marker DNA test kit. This will permit the greatest potential to confirm links without the necessity of upgrading from a lower level of marker test later. Of course, if you have already tested at the 12, 25, 37, 67 or 111 marker level, and wish to upgrade, you may do so at any time. Note that there will be additional costs associated with upgrading. (Please note also that: neither the Project coordinator nor any of the Project participants have any financial or operational interest in FamilyTreeDNA as a company).
Both males and females may also be interested in learning about their direct ancestral female line, which would be their mother, their mother's mother, their mother's grandmother, and so on, back through time along the female line. Both men and women inherit mtDNA, although only women pass it on (men inherit only their mother's mtDNA, but do not pass it on to their children). A male individual interested in this aspect of our Project would join our Project and ideally order a mtDNA test - this would provide information about his mother, his mother's mother, his mother's grandmother, and so on). Females would join our Project and order only an mtDNA test, but it is suggested, to ensure a greater potential for matches in what is termed a 'genealogical' time frame, that anyone interested in this aspect would order the mtDNA Full Sequence test.
If you decided some time ago to have your DNA coding performed by another commercial lab (gasp!), all is not lost. Special pricing and accommodations can be made here, enabling you to transfer your participation and results to this project at any time. We do strive to become the pre-eminent site for DNA / Family Tree linkage research concerning this surname group, in the world.
