About us
The MILAM Y-DNA Surname Project is organized for all who wish to work together to find their common heritage through Y-DNA testing and the sharing of information. From the very beginning this was an Anglo-American Project when in 2006 - 2007 our founding members Lonzo Oliver Milam of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Cyril Alfred Mylam of Bexley, London, England tested nine British men. Currently we have 82 members of whom 27 are from Great Britain. The oldest MILAM record in England is from the County of Norfolk: the 1375 AD Will of George de Mileham. The earliest spelling, Mileham, may have meant mill hamlet or mill house in Olde English. Since our name, MILAM, may also be spelled Millam, Mileham, Milum, Mylam, Mylum, Milom, Milem, etc, any spelling variation is eligible to join the project. We welcome MILAMs world-wide to participate especially ones from the United Kingdom.
The MILAM surname was passed on from father to son, father to son over centuries like the male Y-chromosome. Since only males have the Y-chromosome, only men and their Y-DNA test results can participate in this project. If you are a female, you can ask a male MILAM relative - father, brother, grandfather - to Y DNA test for your line. To participate meaningfully, project members must share the name of their oldest known male ancestor, the dates of his life and his location including country.
We recommend that, when you join this MILAM men's DNA project, you order at least the 37 marker test ( YDNA-37 ) that was recently reduced to $119 from $149. The YDNA-37 test provides more specific results for matching and haplogroup classification and is a better dollar value.
