I will be journeying down to Lee County, VA to collect a DNA sample from a direct paternal descendant of our elusive Joseph Mahan around Thanksgiving...stay tuned! 27 NOV 2005: Disappointment!!! Thanks to the laggardness of National Geographic's large and impersonal customer service center, the Y-DNA test kit arrived the day after I left for the Thanksgiving holiday. I reside in Virginia and ordered the kit over a week before it arrived. National Geographic's mailing warehouse is also in Virginia. The kit should have arrived no sooner than two days following my online instant payment. I will try again over the Christmas holiday... 26 DEC 2005: The excursion to an isolated hamlet in Lee County, VA on a snowy day has paid off! The Y-DNA swab test was completed on a direct paternal male descendant of Joseph Mahan (1787-1865) and the vials are in the mail. He also led me to the cemetery where his known Mahan ancestors are buried!
