Background

Welcome to the Genealogical Forum of Oregon DNA website.

Genetic Genealogy is the use of DNA testing to aid traditional genealogical research. It is the newest and the most accurate research tool for the family historian. It does not replace good research, but testing can…
•Determine if two people are related
•Determine if two people descend from the same ancestor
•Find out if you are related to others with the same surname
•Prove or disprove your family tree research
•Provide clues about your ethnic origin Currently only two branches of one’s lineage can be tested.

Females can test their mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and men can test for both their Y-DNA and their mtDNA as they receive both the Y and X chromosomes. The mtDNA tests the all female lineage (bottom lines of a pedigree chart) and the Y-DNA tests the all male lineage (top lines of a pedigree chart). As only the females can pass the X chromosome to her children, the mtDNA tested for men is testing his mother’s female lineage.

To order a test, click on the JOIN THIS GROUP link in the upper left of this page. If you have not reached this page through the GFO website, please go to the Genealogical Forum of Oregon and click on the FTDNA icon there.

In order to find DNA matches, a tester needs to allow his or her DNA to be available to the public. If you select to have your results made public, place your results in Ysearch to allow for Ydna matches with other testing companies. If you take the mitochrondrial test (mtDNA) then place your results to Mitosearch.

By testing through GFO you help the society earn money and you can always join a surname or geographical group once you have tested.

With the hopes that DNA testing will assist in crumbling your brick walls, I am excited to be your administrator for this project, and urge you to join thousands of other genealogists in solving surname dilemmas.

Again, welcome to the group. We hope you enjoy your visit and that you will be the one to provide that missing link for another!

If you have question, email me at: aulicino@hevanet.com

Remember to visit GFO to learn more about the society and the various meetings and classes available.

Enjoy,
