About us

If you are a BODMAN, BODENHAM, BODNAM, BADMAN and any other reasonable spelling variations you are welcome to join the project. Only males have Y-chromosomes,so only male BODMAN can participate. If you are female, and you have a male BODMAN. relative, you can submit a sample for your line. To participate meaningfully, it would be useful if testees are able to share their direct male line ancestry back to the earliest known BODMAN.

This is a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about the Y DNA surname Bodman and its variants. The family name Bodman occurs in the following countries: Germany, England (and Wales), Scotland, France, the United States,Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden. The Bodman history in England has been extensively researched particularly in the county of Wiltshire. For the Wiltshire Bodmans there are extensive trees on Wikitree. The main groups are around Calne, Keevil and Westbury / Warminster in Wiltshire. There are other historic concentrations of the Bodman name in other counties of England in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Cornwall and Somerset. All of these, including the Wiltshire Bodmans have roots in medieval times, long before parish records in England were started.

Roger Hancock, one of the Group Administrators, maintains a database of Bodmans in and around Wiltshire with individuals born prior to 1851. The database now extends to just under two thousand entries. As well as the database, he has indexed family trees (Microsoft Excel Format) with much additional information including wills, leases and newspaper articles for many Bodman families thorough Wiltshire. Please contact Roger for further information.

Another good place to look for Bodman information is Wikitree. You will find many Bodman individuals there and a One Named Study there:-

The hope is that other researchers - like you - will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect. Please contact the project leaders if you have any queries or wish to contribute to our shared Bodman history. All contributions to our Bodman heritage are most welcome. We look forward to hearing from you!
