Your Genealogy page is where you can add earliest known ancestor and surname information.

Where is my Genealogy page?

To access your Genealogy page:

  1. Sign in to your myFTDNA account.
  2. In the upper-right corner of the page, hover your cursor over your name/Kit No., and click Account Settings from the drop-down menu.

    You are directed to Account Settings.
  3. At the top of Account Settings, click the Genealogy tab.

Earliest Known Ancestors

Your Earliest Known Ancestors page allows you to enter the genealogical information for your earliest known direct maternal and paternal ancestors.

This page contains the following two sections:

  • Earliest Known Ancestors – In this section, you can enter the country of origin and the genealogical information for your earliest known ancestor on your direct maternal and direct paternal lines.
  • Ancestral Locations – In this section, you can enter the geographic coordinates for your earliest known ancestor on your direct maternal and direct paternal lines.
How do I enter information on my direct maternal or direct paternal earliest known ancestor?

To enter information on your direct maternal and direct paternal earliest known ancestors:

  1. Access your Genealogy page.
  2. Click the Earliest Known Ancestors tab. The Earliest Known Ancestors page is displayed.
  3. In the Earliest Known Ancestors section, enter your proven information for your earliest known direct maternal and direct paternal ancestors.
  4. Click Save.
How do I enter or update my earliest known direct paternal or maternal ancestor's country of origin?
To enter your earliest known direct paternal or maternal ancestor’s country of origin:

  • Access your Genealogy page.
  • Click the Earliest Known Ancestors tab. The Earliest Known Ancestors page is displayed.
  • In the Earliest Known Ancestors section:
  • For your paternal ancestor, in the Direct Paternal subsection, click the Country of Origin field (by default, Unknown Origin is displayed), select the country of origin, and click the Save button.
  • For your maternal ancestor, in the Direct Maternal subsection, click the Country of Origin field (by default, Unknown Origin is displayed), and select the country of origin, and click the Save button.

Note: Family Tree DNA uses the International Organization for Standardization’s ISO 3166 for country names.

How do I enter the geographical location and/or geographical coordinates for my direct maternal or direct paternal earliest known ancestor?
To enter the geographical location of your direct maternal and direct paternal earliest known ancestors:

  • Access your Genealogy page.
  • Click the Earliest Known Ancestors tab. The Earliest Known Ancestors page is displayed.
  • In the Ancestral Locations section, click Add Location under the Direct Paternal or Direct Maternal subsection. The Plot Ancestral Locations map is displayed.
  • At the bottom of the map, click Edit Location to the right of Paternal Location or Maternal Location. The Earliest Known Ancestor’s Location window is displayed.
  • Follow the steps in the Earliest Known Ancestor’s Location window.

Surnames

Your Surnames page allows you to enter your ancestral surnames. These are the surnames of all of your grandparents, great-grandparents, great-great-grandparents, etc.

This page contains the following sections:

  • Current Surnames – Displays the surnames and location of the surnames you have previously entered. You can also view, edit, and delete surnames in this section.
  • Add New Surname – In this section you can, add surnames and locations to your profile.
How do I add a surname to my surnames list?

To add ancestral surnames and associated locations/countries:

  • Access your Genealogy page.
  • Click the Earliest Known Ancestors tab. The Earliest Known Ancestors page is displayed.
  • In the Add New Surname section, enter the surname information in the Surname and Location fields.
  • Click Save. The surname information is displayed in the Current Surnames section.
How do I edit a surname on my surnames list?
To edit ancestral surnames and associated locations/countries:

  1. Access your Genealogy page.
  2. Click the Earliest Known Ancestors tab. The Earliest Known Ancestors page is displayed.
  3. In the Current Surnames section, click the Edit button next to the surname and location that you wish to edit.
  4. Make your changes to the surname and/or location.
  5. Click Save.
How do I delete a surname and/or location from my surnames list?

To delete ancestral surnames and associated locations/countries:

  • Access your Genealogy page.
  • Click the Earliest Known Ancestors tab. The Earliest Known Ancestors page is displayed.
  • In the Current Surnames section, click the Delete button next to the surname and location that you wish to delete.
Why don’t I have a button to import surnames from a GEDCOM?
In myFTDNA 2.0,  surnames are not automatically imported to your surname list from a GEDCOM. You will need to enter each name manually.
