About us
This project studies the various genetic backgrounds of those individuals who are direct descendants of the New Sweden colonists of Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania during the 1600s. From the middle (about 1638) to the end of the 17th century, Swedish and Finnish colonists came to settle along the Delaware River valley in what was to become the United States. Even though the formation of the new nation was not to happen for another century, these colonists and their descendants were instrumental in its creation, becoming inextricably part of a society that was unique in deriving its strength from immigrants.
Both paternal and maternal lineages are studied in this project, and those are who are direct descendants of the first Swedes and Finns in North America are invited to join. Project participants are required to prove direct descent from these colonists.
