About us

The purpose of this project is to find/confirm links between members of the various MYLREA clans via the application of DNA analysis.  Even with the plethora of online information available today (eg. BDM, census, immigration records) and hard-copy material stored in archives around the world, the family historian is faced with significant gaps that usually make definitive family connections impossible and in the process, present the historian with a "dead end".  Hopefully, DNA analysis will see an end to those impasses!

Research tends to show that, on the Isle of Man, there were 3 or 4 distinct groups associated with the surname MYLREA - in Malew, in Ballaugh, and in Lonan, the latter arriving from Douglas in the late 1600s. All of these groups probably came in earlier times from Ireland, and the Ballaugh Mylreas are likely to have spread eastwards from settlements in Michael and Jurby.

Spelling of the surname has enjoyed multiple (and often localised) expressions such as McYlleriah in Malew, McYlrea in Ballaugh, and Mylroie in Lonan, although these are only three of what are really 20 or 30 variations.  With migration, and the mix of accents, came a new array of spellings such as McIllrea, Millree, and McYlroy.

If you have MYLREA (or a variation that might pass for Mylrea) in your family tree, then join us and find out more.  There's also a website dedicated to MYLREA family history research:  http://www.mylrea.com.au

The best candidates for DNA analysis are males with the MYLREA surname (or a variation) because their genetic inheritance provides stronger clues to past connections.  If you are interested in being involved, then purchase the Y-12, Y-13 (recommended), or Y-67 kit available on the FTDNA website and join the Mylrea of Mann project at the same time.

If you are a female with a strong MYLREA connection, then you can take the Family Finder test which is not so predictive of past connections but useful nevertheless.  Several females are already part of this project.
