This DNA project is for the purpose of connecting up the various Mahans throughout the world. We are starting in the USA. We feel that there are about 7 to 8 different Mahans that we would fit into.
Because of the scarcity of records on the frontier where many of our Mahan men settled we are having to use science to breakthrough the colonial barrier.
Eventually (and based on experience with other surname groups) we will be able to locate European Mahans which will enable us to cross the ocean and find the ancestral home or homes.
There is a Mahon group out there also doing work. Once we have our results in we can compare notes. There is a strong possibility that the name was not consistently Mahan. But for at least 200 years Mahan or Mayhan has been spelled this way.
