About us

We are the Official Worldwide Jones DNA Project for ALL Joneses including surname variations like: John, Johnes, Ap Jones, etc. We host five separate initiatives: (1) an FTDNA Y-DNA group, (2) an FTDNA Autosomal group, (3) a Facebook group, (4) our own private web site, www.Jones-DNA.org, which includes a pedigree browser, and (5) a new WikiTree one name study initiative.

The Autosomal Jones Group

This group is an autosomal DNA project for matching purposes.

For this group: all test-taking participants are allowed so long as they have a Jones ancestor somewhere in their ancestry; we do allow for the variant surnames too. It's our preference that you have done some sort of autosomal test: FTDNA Family Finder, ancestryDNA, and/or 23andMe. An FTDNA kit is required for entry.

We are ALSO now allowing autosomal descendants into our Jones Y-DNA group...

PLEASE read that group’s entry requirements before attempting to join there.

Question: Why are we doing this?
Answer: Because it’s possible to do autosomal match searching within a project. And because Jones pedigrees tied to autosomal matches can provide important clues to possibly solve lineage “brick walls”.

Question: How do I do “Jones project” specific autosomal match searching?
Answer: (step 1) login, (step 2) click “myFTDNA”, (step 3) click “Tools & Apps”, (step 4) click “Advanced Matching”, (step 5) select the “Family Finder” checkbox, (step 6) choose “Jones” for “Show Matches For:” select box, (step 7) click “Run Report”

Are you interested in joining our autosomal group? Here is how you can!

PLEASE READ before making a new join request:
Please include some background information (ie: birth year, birth location, how you are related) about your most distant Jones ancestor(s) within your join request.

Have you already done an autosomal test outside of FTDNA? You may transfer your existing results so that you can compare your markers with our extensive database!

At the moment, we can only show the male members of this group via FTDNA’s default Y-DNA matrix (see links above). Obviously, autosomal results should include female test participants too though. FTDNA currently doesn’t offer a default scheme like this. So we’re currently working on a custom solution to display *all* our autosomal group members. We hope to have a solution soon.

Are you on Facebook? So are we!

  IMPORTANT NOTES:
(1) We recommend that all our project members file any autosomal test results they may have -- with GedMatch.
(2) PLEASE REMEMBER - all our Administrators are Volunteers!
(3) DISCLAIMER: Our project, its members, and administrators have no expertise in genetic studies and has not independently verified the claims of Family Tree DNA, so do not take responsibility for any results or disclosures of private information that may arise as a result of participation in this project. Participation is welcome, but strictly voluntary and each participant should satisfy himself as to issues of reliability and confidentiality, as neither this group (Jones autosomal DNA) nor the administrators of this project are making any representations or assurances.
