About us

So many of us have lost our families in the centuries, before, during and after the Spanish or Portuguese Inquisition. There were similar persecutions in other countries nearby such as in France or Italy, so those with family connections to there are welcome to also join, because it's possible, for example, that those in France or Italy did have common ancestors with those of us from former Andalusia. Other groups or projects usually only focus on Sephardic Jews or only Muslims who escaped Spain. However, DNA results, anthropology and other research papers show that many of us have both Jewish and Arabian DNA in YDNA, MTDNA and autosomal; as well as these mixed connections in matches. We are therefore trying to establish how and where we connect beyond these religious divisions, remembering that many of us also converted to Christianity (forced or not, or even lived as Crypto-Jews) while there were also Moz-Arabs, those who were not originally Arab but adapted to Arabian culture. This means it is important for Iberian Christians to also join this group so that Jews and Muslims who escaped, can find their lost families. It is vital for all Jews, Arabs and Christians connected to this topic, to feel welcome to join this group in peace, as we benefitted from the golden age of development in Spain where we lived in relative peace for many centuries. Now we can compare the DNA results of those of us from former Andulasia to your results wherever you moved to. Many Iberian Jews or Muslims did eventually mix with other populations after leaving Spain, such as to Britain, Western/Eastern Europe, the Americas and the East. So it's important to map this DNA trail even after Spain/Portugal. That way we can be reunited with lost family. In this group we are looking for our common ancestors, matches at any point in the last 3000 years would be interesting. The first prize would be to find out our lost families and cousins from the 15th century onward, the second prize would be to find those in the centuries while we lived in Spain for 800 to 1500 years, or thirdly, our common ancestors in the Middle-East long before our arrival in Spain. We need to find out where exactly we are from in the Middle-East and we'd even find family who remained in Levant or Arabia. There are also many who want to find out if they were related to the leaders in Spain, or even the Visigoths, or nearby Normans/Vikings, the Caliphate/royalty or other famous Jewish figures in Spain. Whether you are part of the Sephardim, Cohens/Kohannim, Levites, Gershonites, Israelites, Hebrews, Ishmaelites, Qahtanites, Adnanites, Hashemites, Sayyeds, the family of Prophet Muhammad, escapees from the 2nd/first temple destruction of Jerusalem, rare Aramaic speaking Jews, being from the Levant, Sicily or North Africa. You are all welcome. When we look further back to over 2000 years ago, we can also learn about the common ancestors of the Hebrews going back to Eber, Abraham or Isaac and Ishmael/Ismail, whether you believe in this history or not, we can connect this to historical/anthropoligical records or rewrite some of the assumed family trees. Some of the DNA connections we have come across show that there are Muslims with significant "Jewish DNA" signs and Jews with a lot of matches that have Muslim or Arabic names... many of us would like to know our ancient or near history of our families. Were some of us Jews or Muslims before or during our time in Andalusia? Those with stronger traditional/family records of their tribes can fill in the blanks for those who have not kept records. Share with us as much as you want with regard to what family information you have received so that when we match you to a common ancestor, we can have a better idea of what kind of cultural backgrounds we are matching to. Members are also welcome to keep as much info as they want about themselves private. Your privacy is respected in this group, but of course, those who can share more, will be able to help us realise how we connect.
