About us

The goal of the Jewish R1b project is to serve as a gateway for any Jewish man whose predicted or confirmed Haplogroup is R-M343 or any downstream branch (e.g. M269).  Members will be grouped with their closest matches in order to identify Jewish clusters or subclades.  These subclades will be updated as new terminal SNPs (Haplogroup designations), are found, confirmed and sorted according to the new branches of the phylogenic Y-DNA tree.

To improve the knowledge of members, theVolunteer Administrators will help identify their presumed Haplogroup, and advise them on additional (NGS) testing (SNP Pack or Big Y).  The Administrators will refer members to appropriate specific sub-clade projects for deeper analysis and understanding.  In some cases, the administrators will facilitate the creation of new sub-clade projects that will be submitted by interested genetic genealogists to FTDNA. This will greatly assist members to continue the journey find the timeline of their Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA).

Although about 50% of all Western European males belong to Haplogroup R1b (R-M343), it is found in only about 10% of theJewish male population.  Analysis of theProject’s Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data is critical to identifyingJewish lineages (branches) as distinct from this very large segment of the current European population.
