Y-DNA tests are currently available for 12, 25, 37, 67 or 111 markers. We recommend that testers should order the 67-marker test, as this provides more information and allows different family branches to be identified. The cheaper 12-marker test can be taken as a preliminary measure, and will indicate if two participants have a potential match but an upgrade will be required to reduce the time frame of the common ancestor. The Y-DNA test tells you about your direct paternal line, which would be your father, your father's father, your father's father's father, and so on back in time. You must be male to take this test, and you should have one of the surnames shown. If you believe there is a Hefner (or other variant) in your direct male line, although you have a different surname, you are also welcome to participate. If you are female, please find a male in your family tree to participate. If you have taken an mtNDA test or Family Finder test and Hefner (or other variant) is anywhere in your direct pedigree line, you are also welcome to participate.
