H28 & Subclades mtDNA Project

About us

This is a mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) project, for anybody who has had a mtDNA test and been determined to belong to any known subclade of haplogroup H28. Anybody who has a documented C186a mutation from the HVR2 panel (also listed as 186A, in the rCRS format) is eligible to join the project, though Family Tree DNA's mtFullSequence test is highly recommended to establish your exact subclade (subclassification) within this haplogroup. I will be unable to classify you into a specific project subgrouping without results from that test, though you are still welcome to join the project without it. The goals of the project are to attempt to determine the places of geographic origin of the haplogroup and its subclades, and to allow people who belong to this haplogroup to compare data and ancestry information. **VERY IMPORTANT" In order for the key mutations that define your subclade to show up properly, so that I can classify you into a project subgrouping, it is important that you to share your data with project administrators. To do this, follow the following steps (but don't attempt this until you are first approved to join the project, or else you won't see the correct options): First, log into your My FTDNA page at www.familytreedna.com. Then click on the "Manage Personal Information" link (on the left side of your "Welcome to myFTDNA" page). Click on the "Privacy and Sharing" tab on the resulting page. Then scroll down to the "Project Sharing" section. Make sure *both* of the "Opt In To Sharing" checkmarks are checked. Then click the orange "Save" button at the bottom of the page. It is also very important for you to list the name, birth and death dates (if known), and specific birthplace (if known) of your earliest-known mtDNA ancestor, in your profile. This setting can be accessed as follows: First, log into your My FTDNA page at www.familytreedna.com. Then click on the "Manage Personal Information" link (on the left side of your "Welcome to myFTDNA" page). Click on the "Genealogy" tab on the resulting page. On the "Most Distant Ancestors" tab, find the section header "Direct Maternal." Fill in the country of origin for this ancestor on the drop-down list, and then type in your ancestor's name, birth and death dates, and specific birth locality, if known. You will also see an orange button on this page to map the location where this ancestor was born or lived. On the following screens, please fill in your mtDNA ancestor's place of origin as specifically as possible. It is very important that you map that location, as one of the main goals of the project is to attempt to determine the place of geographic origin of the haplogroup. If you only know the country of origin, and not a specific locality, it is okay to just enter the name of the country for this map. Please note that what FTDNA calls the "maternal" ancestor is just a very specific branch of your maternal ancestry: your all-female, mother's mother's... mother lineage. So please be careful to list only your ancestor from that lineage in the maternal ancestry entry.
