About us

Gelles, the immigrants from Czechoslovakia and the Ukraine. A Michael and his brother, John, came over in the 1900-1906 time frame and settled in Johnstown, PA. As I understand it, the name was spelled Geles and Gelesh over in the old country. You’ll be surprised, but correct spelling for Geles should be Gelesh. When they emigrated, Hudlevo was in Czechoslovakia. In Slovak and Czech languages they use š for [sh] sound, so in Slovak it was spelled Geleš [GELESH]. I’m 100% positive about this. Gelles is not common in the US but they did marry into the Ozimok lineage.
