Six major English sources of the Fookes surname are revealed by the 19th and 20th century records: the area south-east of Colchester Essex, London, Bedfordshire, Portsea Hampshire, Dorset, and Cornwall. Recent Y-DNA tests proved that most of the London Fookes, who have current descendants in Australia, originated in Colchester. It is hoped that this surname project can uncover connections between the other groups, and show if we are related to the large Folkes group spanning Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Norfolk.
